Got my new turbo today! Cost was R9 108.60 form TurboDirect plus R290 for courier. Got excellent service from them, very helpful and got things moving on Friday morning. Organized Time Freight at about 12h30 and by 15h00 the turbo was already in their hands and on its way to Cape Town.
Hope to have it fitted maybe over the weekend or next week by qualified BMW meccie. Will be away for about twenty days and when i get back hope to have a sweet sounding E39 530d. Will take some pics of the new turbo and post up. (old turbo still running but sounding slightly louder than i am used to)

So, got my car back yesterday after having the turbo replaced by a friendly BMW mechie. The car is sweet and quiet, cannot even hear the turbo!
Had a look at the old turbo that came off the car this morning. Was considering replacing bearing and seals and keep it as a spare or fit it to my X5 but the bad news is it has broken the exhaust side impeller (see picture) so it is only good for the scrap heap, i think. (will contact Turbodirect and find out if it is viable to replace the impeller/shaft and bearing/seals and what the cost will be. Keep you posted.

That's what was causing the noise, that broken blade on the impeller. Luckily only one blade that broke and very lucky it was on the exhaust side and not the intake side.

Yes, was very fortunate that it was the exhaust side. I replaced it with the same size and type of turbo as i was worried that the ecu would have to be reprogrammed/mapped, as well as the fact that maybe the turbo housing would not match the fittings, etc., etc. Would rather stick to standard turbo and map the car at a later stage as i am quite happy with the performance at the moment (car already decatted/egr blanked and flaps removed)

Moranor, sorry did only now see your post. Have just now taken the old turbo apart and am posting some pictures of shaft, bearing and casing on inlet side. I cannot find any wear on the bearing and the shaft fits without any play! Am amazed as the turbo has done 226k km!!

Moranor, Kisch2604 enquired about the core but as it has a broken impeller i assume he won't be interested any more. The turbo is in parts now but i am willing to give it away as i have no more use for it as i have fitted a new turbo on my car.
Kisch2604, if you read this, you have first option, but if i do not hear from you, then you can have it Moranor.
I took it apart as carefully as i could but had to bash the exhaust casing quite a lot with a hammer to get it apart, but should fit without sealing problems.
I am based in Hermanus, near Cape Town.

I have enquired as to how much a new core will cost me from TurboDirect but to date have not heard from them. Am quite interested as to how much a core will cost as i think that apart from the broken impeller there is still a lot of life in the turbo if fitted with new core and bearing of course. Will email them again and find out what the cost is.
