BMW TRACK DAY RESPONSE - HARD QUESTIONS

Good Day Gentleman

I’m sure everyone is aware of the Track Day that has been planned for the 14th JULY 2018 at Redstar Raceway

The Team has up until now, done everything possible, working hard behind the scenes for the last 3 months to make this day a reality. Sponsors have been acquired, brilliant venue has been acquired, FANTASTIC pricing has been provided as well.

However, DESPITE all this, turnout is dismal. When the poll was taken, tracking outvoted drags by 10%. The amount of guys registered and paid for track is at least 40% less in total, so its leaves me wondering.

My question is , are there more guys interested in registering for the event, and where all the guys that asked and voted for a track event in the 1st place?

As is stands, the team MAY be faced with a tough decision within the next 10 days as to what lies ahead if the DISMAL registration rate does not increase.

DRAGS is Provisionally sold out, with backup list already growing. (just in case there’s queries)

Let me know your guys thoughts...

Eish stuck between a rock and hard place, my vote give it 5 days for the tack guys to step up to the plate if nothing cut the losses and ditch the track day and just do the drag racing bud.

Hey Firi

Thanks for opening up the floor, personal for me red star is way to far out, id be taking my daily driver 100km + away from home to go race on a track and then hope and pray nothing goes wrong. If it was Zwartkops or Kyalami i'd be there. Also i think the track days are more focused to the guys on here with performance cars. Id opted for a place like Gerotek every one with a car could join in. Small race track, handling race trace, high speed oval, skid pan, aqua planing felicity, there even hill decent and accent tracked for them X community, personal i think just an all round better place for some fun and can address a wide audience in our fanatics community.

Thanks for all the effort put into the form thus far Firi & team.

Track days are chilled, I tracked my one and only car on various occasions. And just to be clear it is basically a stock std 325i. You know the wrong e46 6 pot to have, some say. You can view the videos and see for yourself everyone is very well behaved. On one of days the spectrum of cars was from a honda jazz to Ferrari 360 track car. The honda guy had lots inner wheel, wheel spin around the corners, he was gunning it :roflol:

Believe me if you keep you head calm and slowly build into it you will have so much fun.

To say I am deeply sad that the first track event happened just after my relocation is an understatement. Redstar is a awesome track and probably has the best facilities bar Kyalami.

Say what how about you go and attend the day but ask to ride shotgun with someone who is going round. Experience it almost worry free. Maybe there will be a next one and then you take your daily for a "spin".

I think anyone who is sceptical should do this and i asked the track guys to open their doors.

Most of my trackdays I had a passenger and they all enjoyed it.

Thanks for input.

With regard to the track day, as Dewald says its laid back and mostly attended by guys putting their daily drivers on track. The road to Redstar is phenomenal with no potholes etc. The facilities, well theres a reason we chose this as a venue, as its spotless and well maintained, from track to pit areas and toilets etc. Kyalami was way out of reach in terms of budget and makes Redstars amount seem petty even though its no small amount to begin with.

The reason we created a novice class, is for first timers like myself as a perfect example who haven't tracked their cars but would like the experience. There are safety rules, marshals to enforce those rules and the track condition just seems sublime.

However for some odd reason, despite being asked for this event since the conclusion of 2015 raceday, we just not showing numbers and it is depressing to the team who has been working tirelessly to get it done.

We cant force anyone to participate but if things dont look up in the next few days we have some decisions to make going forward next weekend. I sincerely hope we get the response we were expecting, not to please myself, but to make everyone who wanted a track day as well all parties involved feel their efforts have paid off.

Maybe we were just aiming too high and should have to drags....I hope I'm wrong

Personally, I've done the Gerotek handling track and I won't do it with my car ever. I did not like the surface, some dangerous bumps and turns with not much safety.

Some enthusiastic driver can end up in serious trouble.

I have not tracked red starzl, but just by the looks alone it seems way better imo.

For those that are hesitant because they are worried about exceeding their limits and ending up off track. Red Star is a tight technical track with HUGE run off areas. There's no nasty gravel traps to scuff your rims or damage bumpers. The track is surrounded by grass. Being tight and technical you don't get up to crazy speeds, bar the back straight on which there are brake markers and ample space to slow down. The surface is smooth/level NOT slippery, levels of grip are great.

And like Firi mentioned the N12 is a awesome piece of tar, smooth and without potholes. From PTA and Centurion Red Star is a bit further than say ODI but for JHB guys it's pretty much the same distance.

YOU WONT REGRET IT!!

Damn that's really sad man.
From what I remember, I didn't see that the experienced track racers paid, correct?
If they don't or only a hand full pay, why not incorporate it into one class for all cars. Then you have your bike class as well.
With there being only two classes, you can then decrease the track time. Maybe ending it at 11, and start drag at 11:30, giving drag racers more time?

Just a suggestion.

As a matter of interest how many committed to track day and how many have confirmed?

I forget, did the voting rule state you had to commit to that specific track day if you voted what you would prefer?

I dont think that is the point, but rather that the event was planned by the feedback that they received from the votes, which is now falling short due to the lack of interest from those who voted.

As BMW drivers we like to settle the, which is the superior car brand, argument by saying "But which is fastest around a track..."

Now hesitant to enter a track day event :hammerhead:
