I did a lot of research on this topic a few years ago helping a customer.

There are 4 primary causes of this.

1. Bad wiring due to sound systems and crap, which is self explanatory.

2. On the E53, E65 ect there was an issue with the aux fan that something went pop, and you have high current wiring run to it, but this has been sorted out, there has been cases, but its extremely isolated.

3. Dumbass-ness, meth bottles and stuff not secure, guys leaving cans of lighter fluid in the cubby ect.

4. Bad aftermarket Chinese HID's... enough said.

BMW's do not catch on fire like this for no reason.
