Mate there must be something wrong with your box then. SMG since day one has not allowed downshifts that will cause over rev.

Agreed. U can clip the down shift paddle all day, box will only downshift at abt 5500rpm which will translate to 7900rpm when the lower gear is engaged.

Like you said though anything is possible.

Strange thing is that both new motors feel alot more potentent than the original 07 motors. Is there any formal information about upgrades to the later model engines?

I'll ask, I wonder what is the hardware differences between the old and new if any, then theoretically all can be upgraded. I have had an upgrade on the SMG recently, and the shifts are much smoother, maybe that's where the gremlin stuck its head out?? It was scary shit, believe me.

Interesting stuff guys, was wondering about the potential for SMG or DCT gearboxes to engage gears that would over rev the engine...

The problem is, if you look at the last rod bearing on the crank, under a microscope, it looks something like this.

Under motorplan with 50 000km 2006 M5. Had car since march last year. Since then had all plugs replaced (R400 x 10) clutch and flywheel R40k. Battery, alternator R20k ( scary experience when all electronics start switching on and off can't change gears etc). Drive quite conservatively with a good thrashing here and there and get 16L/100km. I know of a black m5 here in Durban with a new motor under plan just before it ran out.
