I would take the m2 just seems to be more hype around the M2. I would prefer a 3l motor if I am going to fork out 870k on a car
Im still questioning the R300k premium over the m235i.
Help me understand your thinking?
BMW M2 makes 272kw @ R890k
M235/240 makes makes 240kw @ R585k
That means it is essentially R300k for 32kw, LSD, DCT and body kit? I loved my M135 and with the MPE it sounded as good as it went. It was fully loaded with Prof Nav, xenons, SR, PDC etc and I paid R500k for it. With JB and DP it makes about the same power as the M2. Yes it didnt have LSD or DCT but I only tracked my M135 once out of the 25 000km I owned it and yes, during that 1 occasion I missed the LSD but the ZF was more than capable so keep DCT.
Not knocking the M2, it will be a massive success and is an epic car. I am however, Scrooge McDuck himself so like to sqeeze value out of every purchase. I dont buy a badge, i buy a car. Just my humble opinion.
I would counter the argument with the following:
Saying the M235i is better value than the M2 is the same as saying the Porsche Cayman GTS is better value than the GT4. They are to each other the same, and made to achieve a very specific goal, deliver the ultimate performance experience.
The M2 is made to be a 10/10ths car, a pure drivers car, everything in it is focused on achieving that.
The M235i is a 8/10ths car at best (which is why it doesnt win many ultimate drivers car comparos) and is aimed at delivering the best experience at that level.
M235i new specced would probably be more than M2 (Without the performane of the M2
M235i will depreciate on base price (So all spent on extras will be lost, M2 not so)
M2 has options that cannot be ticked on M235i for any price:
E LSD (A proper one no the M Performance jobbie with only 30% lock)
Wider track
Better steering
Numerous suspension advancements with high end parts from M3
Lighter weight even though its carrying more in equipment
The kicker for me:
It is a greater whole than the sum of all its parts, a truly immersive experience and no matter what you throw at the M235i it will not achieve that experience.
You could make the M235i faster (at a large cost/time and trouble shooting resource constraint) in a straight, around a track, more comfortable, but to achieve a perfectly balanced experienced that rewards the driver, it will not achieve.
Anyways, Im somebody who values the ultimate drivers experience more so than any other experience a car is able to deliver and value it as such. It may be different for others, to say it is not a better value performance experience I will whole heartedly disagree with, to say you can extract higher performance in individual areas at the expense of other through modding, that I can agree to.
