BMW e46 325i Shuddering

Hi All,

My e46 325i is shuddering on pull off from 1st to 2nd. I have to rev to +- 2000 before no shuddering is felt. This only seems to happen on hot days when I have been driving for awhile, like yesterday afternoon when I was around at houses.

But this morning everything was ok again. Pulled off in 1st just over 1000k on the rev counter.

Does this mean my clutch is going and needes replacing or is this a general problem?

Thanks

Flywheel my man.....the crap thing is, from what i have been hearing, you cant skim the e46 flywheel...so it has to be replaced....

Looking at about 6k for a new one.....NOT FROM AGENTS......

Hey Guys,

Is this a problem on the E46? My 320D does te same thing, usually after about 1Hour in traffic, so does my friends 320i!

Looks like it....

I got a good 2nd hand flywheel for about 4.5k......

Mine was getting worse as the car heated up esp in traffic....was a nightmare.....

my1cent...

during traffic conditions the clutch heats up alot
when in traffic try not to sit with clutch in-rather pull it to nuetral and leave pedal:slap:
the main cause is your clutch plate -when it overheats it becomes hard-like a glass finish -this generates more heat to the flywheel and ends up leaving high spots on the flywheel -thus shudder.eventually the clutch would slip -it can happen to a new clutch as well.:hammerhead:

Btw -if you can obtain the correct tolerances for a flywheel-i'm sure it can be skimmed lightly

some say your dual weight flywheel can not be skimmed but there are engineering places that can do ALL skimming.
you can get a lightways flywheel for about 10grand and its better than the standerd one.

same happend to me, the car would be fine driving in all different conditions, untill i sat for +/- half hour in traffic then it would start to shudder everytime i tried to pull away, turn out to be my clutch

also 1 more thing to consider would be the drive shaft coupling or "flex disk", same symtoms as above, only difference is that the shudder will happen all the time, not just when sitting in traffic

Hi mine does exactly the same, but it is an Automatic 325i 2005 model. Did you get to the root cause?

On a manual its the dual Mas Flywheel. on Auto I dont know but I would suspect torq converter, gearbox or engine mount. I would change the auto transmision oil and filter it will be in the range of R2000 and will do only good if you do

Happened to my a couple of times. Now i just take the car out of gear and my foot off the clutch whenever i stop for a while, like at a red light etc.
Once it starts to shudder it almost feels like it will never stop.

My E46 went to the stealers and they replaced the Dual Mass flywheel under motorplan. The value was R13k.... can you believe it ...

100% now.

If you remove the old original clutch you will see tht it is a "LUK" clutch and its written on the flywheel and clutch plate its the oem. You can get the LUK complete kit (flywheel, clutch, release bearing, and bolts) for 5k at middas.

Also note that the fuel filter and pollen filter and air filter you buy at Middas "the Man filter" with the Gud Sticker on it, is the OEM make. Only diffirence is the BMW badge on the filter all the other numbers are the same
