Hi, i would just like to know from other e46 m driver when is the best time to drive the car hard, taking into account a cold start.

I wait till my heat guage is around the middle and oil temp guage is just below middle and the car's rev light is on the last amber. Dont know if am doing it correctly. :dunno:

My oil guage and rev light dont go past the above mentioned even when i do abit of normal driving, not sure if thats the norm. :mmm:

As far as I know, its best if your oil gauge is sitting between 75C and 100C, ideal operating temperature. Dont rev your car hard while its cold, thats just asking for trouble.

Rule of thumb, if the oil temp is between half and that first dot, then give it horns. I only rev mine to 4500rpm until the oil is at the correct temp. Water temp means stuff all.

My car now has 195 000 km's on it and still one of the stronger ones around. Must be doing something right.

From a very cold start, I never pass 2000rpm until i get some sort of oil temp pressure,
then up to 3500rpm until oil is place which is is between half and that first dot.

There are quite a few E46 M3's in the US running over 200 000 miles, so 320 000 km's. Their engines have never been opened either and compression is still within spec. I do however advocate doing an oil change every 10 000 km's instead of the factory stated 25 000 km's.

foot flat on the acc pedal. Click key to on, start. Keep foot flat. release clutch while keeping foot flat. /ignore the funny smell.
Shift to second. rinse and repeat.
