Guys,
Any idea what this would cost to have this job done by a workshop ....on Labour that is I will supply the kit from here ?

I had this done by a workshop. Did it when the car was at 190000kms. Was R1500 for labour. Spares was about R200 for the seals. But u also need a new tappet cover gasket which was R1500,its a 3 piece set and new vanos cover bolts R80 for 4 u need 8 for 3.2 engine. For the guys who have extra moola I would suggest do it. For those of us who don't I did mine with BMW spares and its fine. If it can give me another 190000kms
I'd be fine with that.

BMW do not sell the center O rings which are very important for vanos operation... if you want to get that 'Fixed' at BMW you have to get a new vanos unit...

BMW also do not address the rattle problem because of the excess clearance inside the pistons...

They do sell the O rings. Its just that they don't last long. Mine was done at 190000kms. And if these new 1s can get me another 100000kms even I'll be happy with that. Just saying if u have the cash go for this. If I had I would have. If you don't BMW O rings is ok.

Also I don't recomend DIY because the vanos solenoids are very fragile and just 1 costs R6000. We have 2 for 3l and 4 for 3.2. Best to get someone who's has done it before.

they dont sell all the O rings thats what im saying (unless you want to buy a whole new Vanos from BMW)... you are not getting the full benefit of vanos if you dont change all the O rings...

bedsides that... its a bit silly to spend R1500 for labour only to do half the job and save a couple hundred rand?

I am sure G&C in CPT will do a good job so i would recommend you do it there...

thanks moranor

yes thanks will heed your advise and give G&C a call on Monday to find out what they will cost . Keep me posted on ETA of parts and will plan to have it done accordingly .

guesstimate ....should be R2200 in parts and at most R2000 odd on labour .....or am I being optimistic

I need the S50b32/seals/rattle kit (1999 Mcoupe )

all depends on what parts you need from BMW they like to charge for the M :(
have a look at the procedures there are suggestions on what parts should be changed at the same time...

S50b32 seals DIY
S50b32 rattle DIY
S50b30 seals DIY
S50b30 rattle DIY

they also give details on a diaphragm spring retrofit that helps alot with rattle on these older vanos engines the part numbers are in the writeups...

i would definitely change the valve cover gasket with the vanos repair if the gasket has not been changed recently...

This is the Vanos diagram from realoem for S50B32 engine

Which O rings don't BMW have?

Every item on this diagram can be ordered if its not in SA they will bring it from Germany.

I don't think its a matter of saving cash. Its a matter of being logical and doing the sensable thing. I'm not being penny wise or anything if you really want to sort out the vanos 100% then I would do what Calyspo did and send the entire Vanos to DR Vanos for refurb inculding, if I'm not mistaken the solenoids. So you see it is silly spending this amount and not get the solenoids looked at for damage and correct operation.

where are small the piston seals on the right of this pic?

solenoids should bring up codes?

Its all very well and good saying you can just spend R 200 at the dealers, but R 200 does NOT get you the same thing...

(guys order is on hold till this debate is over)

do you have the right one? because the euro M3 one only came out last week... the US M3 kit wont fit the SA M3... if you got the wrong kit you can trade it in with me for a credit on the right kit :)

if you got them before now 100% they wrong... but luckily the US M3 uses the same seals as the M52b so i can just sell your seals onto someone with a non M e36... as long as they not damaged in any way :)

Yes this kit is better. The O rings hold up better under extreme conditions. With regards to BMW not having some of the parts....Let's agree to disgree.
