well with the amount of info you have given I would suggest you rather put your choices in a hat and draw an option :flyfun:

Agreed....mileage. condition. ..etc....but from that you'd be able to make up your own mind.

some people say that the m42 has forged much better quality and crankshaft, is it true? in which the engine is easier to get parts to make it more fun / powerful

From what I know all the 4 pot e36 are pretty bullet proof(if you maintain it).

You need give more info as to what you want, you question is too vague. Google what you want to know and read and then read some more cause you are not the first person to have asked these questions believe me.

If you want more power at a later stage then don't buy a 4cyl model, just get a 328i from the get go. NA modifications to the 4cyl motors will give you the fuel consumption of a 328i if not worse, yet the power and torque won't be close to a 328i so a 328i will still leave you behind and still return better gas mileage.
If you plan to turbocharge then the M42 is a good candidate as the crank and rods are already forged items, the M44 has a cast crank and rods (weaker). In most aftermarket turbo applications on BMWs you invariably lose the aircon as there isn't enough space for a turbo and an aircon pump unless you get seriously creative in your turbo manifold design.

quite enjoyed your opinion, is these answers that I seek, I can not just opt for a 328 because I'm from Portugal and the price of a car that is prohibitive, and change the engine, requires a series of unthinkable legal issues, so in infelzmente But what I want is to give even more power on a 318 is that yes this can change M42 to m44 or m44 for m42 without problem at the level of law.

Take this opportunity to ask and the level of mechanics that is more accurate to switch between m42 and m44 engine, ecu, and more pieces that I have to change more?

Thank you.

Ok then, 2options: 1st option is to buy a 318is M44B19 and keep it well maintained and stock, they get great gas mileage when all the sensors are working and have a stronger/flatter torque curve over the M42B18. Its not a fast car but not a slow one either @sea level. Best bet for a daily driver.

2nd option is to buy a M42B18 and bore the block out, fit larger pistons, shorter rods and modify a E46 320d crankshaft to fit into your motor. This will increase the bore and stroke to around 2.0lt-2.1lt making it a stroker motor, increased power and torque from the 200-300cc displacement increase will put you close to or on par with a stock 325i on performance figures. Its not a cheap conversion as bigger pistons and shorter rods are needed, the 320d crank and the M42 block will need engineering too. Also you need someone to put it all together for you. This would be more of a weekend toy as it won't be so frugal on fuel any more...
