Bearing knock

Most M3's out there are raped. So its also taking a chance..... could be patched up just for the sale until you drive it for some time and the issues start

The reason for considering this option was to weigh the options of doing a rebuild on the motor or buying one in a so called good condition and playing it by ear.

I would do the same! Better to get a cheaper one with a damaged engine and to rebuild it completely instead of getting a used one with unknown history....which can be damaged within some weeks after getting it...

not a bad way of looking at it, just one issue.. because of the "M" the cost of this approach can rise so quickly your nose will bleed..

You looking at buying that Phoenix yellow M on Gumtree?
Looks immaculate but with a Knock I'd stay away especially being an M it will get pricey...Probably been driven very hard often to end up with this problem so i'm sure all the other bits have loads of wear and tear and I also saw that it was the SMG which should also be a scare for you bud...Just my opinion though.

Nope another black manual one

Here we go. This is how you should build the engine.

Carrillo rods -- R2700 per rod. x6 = R16 200

CP pistons - R10 500.

Vac big end and main performance coated Bearings - R2000.

Get the crank balanced and block engineered, maybe another R7k. Ask Axis engine works to build it for you and you're good to go.

Good luck,

But you can check whats damaged...

I think that your guys are not really aware of the M3 E46 problems....they all have bearing issues and they all collapse before the engine has reached the 100.000km....if they are treated like an M should be treated...

Change of bearings for that car should be in the manual marked as tear and wear!!!

This is by the way also valid for the 8 and 10 cylinder M-engine....

Problem is that for the big ends to be changed one needs to remove the engine and turn it upside down on an engine stand so that the bearings can be inserted correctly and torqued correctly.
Not an inexpensive exercise.

btw whoever proposes that it can be done in-situ had better have an acoustic electronic angle torque wrench or they will get it wrong and the likelyhood of running the new bearings is high.

For the M3 E46, E36 and E9x you can do it without taking out the engine...done already several times!

As I have stated there is a right way and there is a wrong way.
Your prerogative to choose one.

Guy swopped the car for a Vtec without getting back to me

Or well the search continues

:nonono:

Dont stress buddy if he swapped it for a vtec, then you could probably guess the amount of work and money you would have needed to put in
