The reason for considering this option was to weigh the options of doing a rebuild on the motor or buying one in a so called good condition and playing it by ear.
I would do the same! Better to get a cheaper one with a damaged engine and to rebuild it completely instead of getting a used one with unknown history....which can be damaged within some weeks after getting it...
not a bad way of looking at it, just one issue.. because of the "M" the cost of this approach can rise so quickly your nose will bleed..
But you can check whats damaged...
I think that your guys are not really aware of the M3 E46 problems....they all have bearing issues and they all collapse before the engine has reached the 100.000km....if they are treated like an M should be treated...
Change of bearings for that car should be in the manual marked as tear and wear!!!
This is by the way also valid for the 8 and 10 cylinder M-engine....
