Its kinda the only was i can explain it (the noise) kind of like that noise old cars make when you turn them off.. (i look like an idiot saying it over and over to myself)

na not a backfire.. it came from the engine..

i have to :(

its done it before, after i started the car after filling up, i'm still on the same tank of petrol.. its never done it before.. i'm not sure if the fuel has something to do with it..

i'm hoping its just fuel.. and after this tank maybe replace the fuel filter.. or.. i don't know.. this really isn't forte..

possibly the fuel with the issues around low tanks - u might have gotten the scraps at the bottom of the tanks.

I just started her up now again to see if it was better and its not :( what if there was something in the petrol like a big-ass flake of something that's now blocking the filter and starving the poor car of fuel...

My biggest thing is I don't know how serious it is and i can't really afford to take it to bmw... Is there anyone in Cape Town that is willing to just listen to it start up and take it for a drive around the block?

Trust me, get onto diagnosing the problem as soon as possible.

Can you tell us where in the engine bay its coming from,

Does it sound like a mechanical grinding/banging noise.

Or does the car just sound rough and generally shake a bit ?

The sound was a once off thing, now its just a little more rough than usual, takes longer to turn over, but the main thing is there is no power.. i've driven in a diesel car that had its boost pipe pop off and it kind of feels like that.. like it drives but no power behind it..

Noise - not all the time like loose timing chain etc ?
Does she ( must be she if giving shyte ) rev ok in neutral ?
loss of power all the time or only when accelerating or pulling uphill ?
Check fan blades for breakage if shaking at idle - out of balance makes motor shake a bit .
Get diagnostic done at Zeemax or so in CT .
Vanos stuck ?
Flux Capacitor - check with Jandre about this !!

Not sure what motor...

There isn't any noise now... (like something loose)
She seems to rev ok in neutral, but if i rev her up, when it returns it dips ever so slightly below 600rpm (idle) whereas before it would return to 1000rpm or so and then slowly work down to 600..
The loss in power is most noticeable when accelerating but i'm not sure if its only then or just feels like it..
motor doesn't seem to shake to much.. and blades are all still there..
The only time i have off is next week so i'll book her in then if she's still struggling..
At first i thought maybe the vanos because it was like the timing was out but there isn't any smoke when i start her, rev her or at idle (i think bad timing = smoke and vanos = timing) <-- mind you i know nothing about this...

EDIT: This is what i know about flux capacitors >> http://wiki.eveonline.com/en/wiki/Alpha_Reactor_Control:_Capacitor_Flux

I was thinking more of the phonetic sound :)
