Automatic gearbox

Hi guys,

After owning a auto for the last year I have a few questions regarding each individuals driving style.

When in stop start traffic do you put car in neutral or stay in drive and foot on the brake?
I tend to go into neutral if i anticipate a longer stop.

Also when parking I go onto neutral and then pull the hand brake and then into park. The hand brake then is taking the load instead of the gear box. Perhaps I'm OCD

Interested in your inputs.

I leave my car in drive when coming to a stop at a stop sign or red light. I have the start stop function I used to hate but I am used to it now.
What I however do when pulling away from a steep hill or reversing out a drive way with a slope is pull the handbrake and once car starts moving I release it. Same I do when driving a manual car.

Thanks. Ya I coded my start stop to be off from start. Just not a fan of it.

1. I have auto-hold on the X3, so foot of the brake pedal when stopped, Stop/Start coded to permanently off.
2. I leave both, the X3 and F30 in "D" when parking, car goes to "P" automatically when switching off the car.

In a DSG, it is advised to put the gear into N at a stop, especially on an incline. Risk of clutch burning is high on certain DSGs. Mainly an issue with VAG cars...

Read this very informative thread from ZF a while ago.

I posed a question to them about shifting to Neutral when stopped at traffic lights. They said don't do it often.

"When switching to Neutral at every traffic light, the micro switches on the selector will also wear out quicker. "

Thanks this was helpful! Seems I was doing more damage than good by going into neutral

Yup, quite a problem on the dry clutch systems. Had the clutches replaced on my old pgti.
Was told to shift in manual when in traffic and that somewhat preserved the clutches until I sold the car.

I always wondered if the same would apply to the zf8 gearboxes but one thing I did notice is that when parked on and incline/ decline and I have to either shift to D or R, the gearbox would make a loud sound once the gear in engaged. My mech told me that pumping the brake before engaging gear eliminates that sound and I’ve tried it and it sounds much better
