Auto Glen BMW - RIP OFF

Wahahahahhahahajah! What the hell, how can a dealership be that ridiculous. Insurance would never pay that. Who would write off a car over a stolen battery and what looks like a cut cables, only to the battery. Sucks for the huge waste of your time tho. Issue was diagnosed above with technical diagrams and all, yet BMW send a quote like that. You should post to a newspaper for the jokes section. “Stolen BMW batteries cost R215k to replace”

Take the car home , fix it yourself , to be honest , just check if anything has shorted up front , the cable that has been removed from there with the top plate can be found in a scrap yard , just make sure you get one that’s intact as it’s fused apparently

You may need 1 or 2 other small bits , but not 200k worth , BMW will change their entire tune when you say please send back all replaced parts , they won’t go through the effort of replacing an entire harness

Two weeks ago my wifes E90 320d was broken into. The battery was stolen and in the process various wires/cables cut around teh battery. Contacted my insurance and the car was taken to Auto Glen BMW(BMW JHB South)
On arrival I assumed all would go well... to my horror. My insurance company was given 3 quotes, of which each one escalating. The second just to install a battery to diagnose all faults was just over R20K and the last being R215,724.27(yes you read right). https://www.bmwfanatics.co.za/images/smilies/rage.gif
My experience has since been nothing short of a nightmare... for a car that is valued at R115K
If I was any older I probably would have died of a heart attack. I was assured that this was the correct pricing with the main wiring harness being priced at over R112,000.00.
The attitude received when querying moving the car elsewhere was so unprofessional. We were threatened with storage costs, time spent and various other miscellaneous costing.
Is it based on it being an opportunistic mindset seeing as it is an insurance claim, you decide.

Firstly, that quote is BS, secondly, you have a lot of personal info on that sheet brother, my advice is to take it down and take a screenshot of the cost breakdown and post that instead, before someone unsavory gets hold of it for whatever purpose, as we can't control lurkers on the site.

Secondly, BMW usually has a cable repair kit for any & every harness in the car, so they could just repair instead of replace.

Lastly I'm assuming your car is out of motorplan by now, so find out by your insurance if they allow the use of second hand parts. Some scrapyards are insurance approved so even if they NEEDED to purchase a complete harness, it would be a fraction of the cost, as there are 1000's of e90's being stripped all over the country

Besides for the R112k for the new harness they are also charging R54k for the labor to replace it! Call ABM and get a quote from them - send the pics and then you will have a second opinion and can make an informative decision.

Well I'm struggling to understand the issue here, of course I agree that that quote is silly.... But I don't see any claims that you were forced to repair the car there?

There are many BMW dealerships (ABM for one who is a forum sponsor), and even more RMI approved shops that insurance would work with.

Is this more of an awareness post perhaps?

Yes, this was purely for awareness. That was the closest dealership, thats the only reason it was taken there.

I think if you hit the report button, you summon an admin, and then you can ask then to remove it for you. You can only edit a post for a short time after you have uploaded it.

BMW doesn't fix harnesses, my sisters car was stolen and recovered and they said that if the harness is damaged they will replace it and also told us its over 100k

best way get insurance to pay you and then get it fixed privately

The dealer is not quoting you correct here. The labour code they used for 600 units is an "open time" code, meaning they type the labour code and how many units they want you to pay, it is not a "fixed labour code", they should go on AIR type the vin and look for the correct labour code. Then the 2nd issue is they want you to pay for the surcharge (this is actually discount they give you by sending your battery back to supplier, there is no battery so it should not even be on the quote. they quote on energy diagnosis, you only do that to check if a battery is still okay or not, not on a new battery.

Crazy to think that they definitely can’t quote properly but you believe and trust they are capable of servicing and maintaining cars properly....

This looks like a "we really don't want this job" quote. Let's face it. To strip a car to the extent required to replace the harness (if indeed that is what's required) is a monumental task. Then the fun comes with the reassembly. Broken clips, resultant rattles and glitches that will keep the customer coming back repeatedly. If I were the workshop manager I would not want to take on a repair like that because of the potential downside.

Solution? They quote an astronomical price confident that they'll NOT get the job.

I doubt any mainstream dealer would quote any less and of course going to a "general panelbeater" (as opposed to an approved ARC which will quote at the same level) or auto electrical outlet will probably result in an even bigger headache.

Perhaps a little unfair to nail the dealership in context of the above??

Nope not unfair , it’s ridicules . To put this in context . A complete enjin swap on a LR3/4 ( diesels like to snap cranks) will set you back R150k , and the 4x4 community goes nuts about it . This should be hanged on the big clock for everybody to see , and there should be a law against this type of dealership behavior
