Was the same with my 2004 330i. Yesterday I swapped out the air filter at 98000km and it was the original.

Idiots....and when you ask them for the old parts, they claim that it has to be returned to BMW for motor plan red tape! All a load of BULL!!!

is the date stamp not the date of manufacture of the filter, and then it lies in a parts store for many many years before it is actually used.

It could have been "FITTED" in 2012 as a "new" part, surely there is no expiry date on such items as far as shelf life is concerned.

I seriously doubt that this air filter has been in your car since 2004 (9 years), it was probably changed as per maintenance schedule with a new one (condition) irrespective of when this "new-one" was originally manufactured.

I see your concern, and this would require some "Carte-Blanche" type of investigation.

I would bet my (.....) that a separate outsourced company was tasked to produce a "batch" for BMW back in 2004, they would have been given a total amount of vehicles produced and then given a multiple of (lets say) 5 representing 5 years worth of replacement on all the models that use this type of air-filter, so by example...100 000 vehicles manufactured, then five years of expected air-filter replacement, thus a "batch" of 500 000 air filters produced.

each BMW service centre was then allocated a portion of this batch to keep in their stock/spares room, and until they run out, they will keep on using this original batch that they received...even if it is now 9 years later

but I am not saying that this is the case....in your case they might have omitted fraudulently to replace the original filter....difficult one to prove.

except if you go to BMW spares as an undercover sleuth, and order over the counter an air-filter the same as this one....and if it comes out "fresh" from the spares store with the same manufacture date...then you will have your answer.

I'm sorry too as I'm sure the car went to Forsdicks for a service during my time, I just cant remember whether it was Inspec 1 or 2. I may have the invoice or it was in the service book holder.... This is shocking :argh:

I must say I now feel more comfortable that Gizmo only services my cars...
