Affordable quality engine management system in SA?

I'm using Spitronics in my Ute, have had no shit in 2.5 years.

It also has sequential fuel injector control and also makes use of a lambda sensor tune according to an optimal air fuel ratio. As I understand it, these 2 features are not present with Dicktator.

I'm happy, safe reliable power and decent fuel economy too. I average anywhere between 9-12l per 100kms depending on driving style.

A shining example of how crap some of these local ECUs are is right in the very same car you and I know very well.

Under perfect conditions it runs really well, but if the weather conditions changes into so much as overcast, it runs like poo.

At the very least, it should support :

MAP
TPS
CPS
ICV
Lambda probes
Coolant temp adaption
IAT

Say you have a car with vanos and you opt to use the 'all dominating' Dictator system to run it, you need two of the things to run your engine, one for timing and fuelling and the other just to run the vanos system, you end up forking out double the R4500-R5000 you paid for the one dictator, R10k in on a crap system and then all of a sudden the R11k price for a Haltech doesn't look bad at all and it can do so much more than the dictator units can.:bin:

The only one I'd go near would be PerfectPower. They are internationally respected and the workshop backs off the office where all the programming is done so updates are quick.

Otherwise Motec, I am debating it myself. :'(

I'm guessing you using it for your 6er Skank.

To me it seems like a big big decision, want the least hassle, reliable EMS

I'm actually running Spitronics and don't like it at all. It CANNOT hold an idle on startup on an M30. I also think the interface is primitive and the mapping is too simple, lacks granularity. Need a 4 cylinder racecar EMS, Spitronics will do.

PerfectPower is a more elegant solution with out a doubt. Want the best? International is the only way.

Remember, we didn't get TV until 1976, no way South Africans are going to program a decent EMS until 2035 ;)

+1 for Haltech and Link ECUs.

Subaru community also has the same feedback Gizmo is providing. You can get a car running, but it will never run well or close to full capability as it can't utilize variable valve timing, knock control, proper open and closed loop fueling and crossover windows etc. Spitronics appears to be a decent option on a budget as many of the 2JZs and scooby builds are running this now. The Scooby ECUs have a great deal of capability built in so it blows my mind that anyone has gone down the Dicktator route. Guys fit it because the car is in limp mode, either because of sensors or something worse. They don't bother to fix the underlying problem. Dictator seems to work fine and then a week or two later its bearings, melted pistons or some other catastrophic failure (which then gets attributed to just being a Subaru problem)

Even on relatively simple cars where it should work in theory, by the time you are on your third Dicktastor (because it got a bit too humid one day and it decided to die), you will be wishing you had spent the money on a Haltech, Link G4, AEM EMS etc. ECU.

Apart from doing the basics very well, IIRC the Link and AEMs can be kitted out with sensors to monitor ethanol content and det, adjusting itself accordingly. They will have extensive boost control options (Boost per gear, TPS and RPM boost maps) as well as launch control, no-lift-to-shift etc. Will you use them all? Probably not... but is it not better to start with a better platform that is also going to potentially cost you less in the long run? The LAST thing you want is to be forking out for retunes, replacements and even if something is covered under warranty, you really don't want to be dealing with the hassle that goes with it.
