Advice Needed - Car smells hot

Hi All

Need some advice on my lol90 320i.

Some background first.
December 0f 2017 the car developed a small water leak after which i replaced the ffg. as the mileage was around 213k kms. The car never over heated.
Water pump
Thermostat
Radiator
All water pipes
BMW coolant

I did not replace the expansion tank.

The car has done approx. 6k kms in that time with no heating issues.
I activate the hidden temp gauge menu most times when driving and it and it goes to a max of 104 when sitting in traffic(comes down to 101 as soon as i take off) and at 99 when freeway cruising. Also goes down to about 80 when going the rev range which is how what always and seems to be normal.

Power seems to be normal when hot( and breaks traction in 6th gear with all of its 115 1kws) :roflol:

The issue is that the car smells very hot when parked. (if you get what i am saying about smelling temperature)

What could cause that?
Any ideas?

More than usual?

If I have been driving the freeway, as soon as I park the car at home in the garage, there is a lot of heat from the engine, but nothing that is not normal. There is a lot of heat that needs to cool down.

What does the sound insulation on the bonnet look like when you open it? The soft black cover that is bottom side of the bonnet.

if it is manual, perhaps the clutch smell?

if water leak, maybe the smell of coolant burning on other parts?

or oil leak, resulting in another burn smell?

or as @subloaded said, brakes?

Options are vast.....

I would check expansion tank and piping.

It is a common issue on e series cars. Let us know
Have a sniff around the engine bay and look for white spotting on the pipes and tank.

@Tinuva - It is more than usual and i believe the E90 doesnt come with the black cloth heat insulation or mine doesnt have it.

@Subloaded - i am not sure if its brakes but they were replaced around the same time as doing the rest of the maintenance (discs and pads on the front and pads at the back)

@Yuben - it is a manual and it could be clutch as it has been starting to shudder recently.
There are no oil leaks or water leaks as the car does not require any top ups.

Wouldnt clutch have a more distinct smell though?

I have not replaced the expansion tank but have replaced all the pipes.
Think i should replace the tank as well.

Fan belt coming on as it should?

Fan seems to be working fine but will test tomorrow.
Is it normal for the fan to kick in when the temp shows approx 104 as thats what it was doing previously

The LCI e90 do not come with heat insulation.

How is your oil consumption? it is possible that you may have a small leak that drys up on the engine...any smell whilst driving with fan on ? (AC off)

My car is also rather warm when I park...but no real burning smells:skit:

No oil consumption at all and no smell of oil.
I wont say burning smell but just like its hot.

Maybe i am being paranoid but i will definitely get the expansion tank changed as well.

Smells from the exhaust and a hot engine and bonnet are normal after driving.

When you open the bonnet the fan and the movement of the pulleys and serpentine belt will also push heat and engine smells upwards but that is pretty normal.

So not sure what you describing.
