Advice: M140i SE

Hi guys,

Noob here looking for advice. Bought an M140i Shadow Edition in February this year and have enjoyed every second of it. However, priorities have changed and I'm looking at selling it. Only now do I see how badly a BMW depreciates.

What would be the best way to try and get some decent money back? Any dealers you would recommend talking to?

Regards

I would suggest not taking it to a dealership.

Having bought it in Feb this year you are most likely going to lose a fair amount of money if you sell now. You can pick up a 2018 SE with a few km's for under 600k now. I will never buy new off the floor again.

My advice, sell privately and wait for the right buyer.

I agree, but its hard, but not impossible getting a private buyer when you looking at selling an expensive car like that and its risky. If you buy a new car you should know that its going to depreciate badly especially in the 1st 2 years.
Unfortunately thats the way it is. :dunnoanymore:

Damn, i just ordered a Shadow edition M140i 3 weeks ago.
Not sure what you paid, but they seem to be selling demo models around the R550-R600k mark. Spec seems to make a lot of difference in price.
Try sell privately is the best way to get highest price, but might take while.

Private sale it is however, a loss is almost certain you can only try to reduce impact by waiting a bit longer for the right buyer to come along. :hammerhead:

If you going to trade, having extras on your does make much of a difference. The dealer just opens the book and gives you a value generally.

Yip thats true, but when they go to sell it again, the never stop talking about all the extras blah blah.
If the car is well spec'd and happens to be very close to what someone is looking for you can minimize the loss. But you might have to wait a while and that costs for finance fees anyway.
Just driving a new car out of the showroom floor, expect to lose 10-15% very quickly, like by the time you make it down the road.

1. All cars (besides high demand, limited supply models) lose at least 15% of their value when you drive off. That is the VAT that you will never get back, unless you are a VAT registered business (and you bought a single cab bakkie).

2. If you had financed the car, then chat to the financing company and see if they can extend the payment term or arrange a sale of the car to settle your debt (without any adverse remarks on your credit record). Banks (besides VBS Mutual Bank) are willing to make a plan, if you discuss openly with them.

Sorry to hear... What value do you want vs the trade-in value?

Appreciate the comments guys. Thanks a lot. Yes, never buying new again :blueCry:

Sadly, a Golf R would have held its value better...

Point a shoot was something I wanted to stay away from. As a car, it's leagues ahead of what VW and Audi provide. I will stick with RWD for now :blowheart:

Its unfortunate but the reality is a loss is inevitable, the only question is how much are you willing to lose?

Private sales imo are risky on many levels.

All my cars previously sold have all been done privately...and all bought bar my BM which i bought from new was also private...just be sensible when dealing privately.
I see the car is up for sale in another thread, its stunning!

Golf Rs are so boring. You made the right choice. Car looks amazing. Going to be hard to replace.
