Advice: E90 320d Tyre Pressure

Hey Guys,

I got a 2006 320d M-sport, currently I have conti's 17's, Fronts 225 45 17 and Back 255 40 17

My wife and I use this car. It advises on the drivers door 2.5 fronts and 2.6 back, but my tyres are wearing out on the outside, I have now changed it to 2.4 all around.

Please can you guys advise if youll have the same size tyre, what do you put in when there is no load and if youll do have a load. Really dont want to change tyres in the next few months.

Wheel alignment maybe? I would use the max pressure indicated on the door.

mine is 2.6 in front and 2.8 in the back.

Will get the wheel alignment checked up tomorrow, just wanted an idea what other guys are putting for their tyre pressure.

is it wearing on one side of the tire or both sides?

decreasing pressure will make it worse...

if its only wearing on one side then you probably have a Toe issue...

I had number 2 on my e46 318i. R3commended pressure was 1.8 for the fronts, went through a set of bridgestones on the front in 20000kms. Now keep the pressures higher and its better now

if you checking the pressure at the garage when the tires are warm i would make it 0.4bar higher than what the door card says... best is if you get your own pump and check the tires cold...

door card is for cold pressures

Must be an alignment issue! Have the same tyre sizes on my 330i and according to the door card it shows the pressures as follows for 225/45R17 and 255/40R17:

Front: 2.2 Bar and Rear 2.4 Bar - unladen up to 4 people
Front: 2.6 Bar and Rear 2.8 Bar - fully laden up to 5 people

So your pressures are fine - personally I find the lower pressures are fine and offers a good balance, but 2.4 and 2.6 for this setup is also good in most cases.

The other possible reason - your wife's driving style and cornering... :rollsmile:

I would have the alignment checked as well as the shocks. :thumbs:

Edit: just saw above - definitely invest in your own proper pressure gauge and mini air compressor! I would never trust the pressure gauges at a garage...

Ok cool, currently its 2.4 all round, ill try it out and see, if im not happy, ill make it 2.4 fronts and 2.8 back

Just realised that you say you have Conti's - I gather then Sport Contact 2 RFT's. First of all, had these on my car when I bought it - worst tyres ever!! They tramline and are generally noisy - but on the front they do seem to wear (or appear to wear) on the outer shoulders. Maybe post a pic of one of your front tyres so that we can see the shoulder and tread surface...

Mine wears mostly in the inside...I thought that's normal on BMW cos of the suspension setup ...

My pre LCI has the exact same set up, i fill 2.2 in front and 2.4 in the rear, no issues at all :thumbs:
