I have seen decent generic plastic front msport bumpers for E39's, they are available. Fender should be normal E39 one, pretty sure can be sourced at a scrappy. The light will be the challenge, may have to go stealers which will be pricey.

I'm no expert but sure you can get the car sorted for less than 20k, get the cash and fix it...sure you will have surplus money leftover from a 3rd party claim.

Of course the insurance pays for pirate parts, they actually have incentives for it.

Santam for example, will pay out a larger markup up for second hand parts if parts sourced from their agents, this is fact, not fiction.

The problem is, with the E39, there are virtually no pirate parts available, and no self respecting person would use the "autostyle" fibre glass scrap.

However, good second hand is the way to go here, second hand parts of course is also very much endorsed by every major insurance company.

The only time you are not allowed to put in second hand components is if the vehicle is under warrentee,

That said, the insurance, or at least the good ones, do have a policy that they do not fit second hand safety equipment, nor pirate, so stuff like airbags, shocks, control arms ect, will be original and new.

My thought exactly.

I don't mind having the car repaired if it's done right, but... If the insurance decides to mark the car as written off and then offer to sell back to me, I will not, repeat WILL NOT take it back.

No ways in hell am I driving around in a car that can't be insured again.

Whats the insured value on your car? Surely its in the region of a 100k. Thats the value on my 530i.

Doubt they will write it off.

Sorry Chef :blueCry::blueCry::blueCry:

If you buy the car back it can still be insured, just at a much lower value though

I agree as well. The light is definitely the biggest challenge. 10k at the dealers. And then to have one new one and one old one... :(

Insured value is 105k.

My broker is also pretty certain they won't write it off.

I've been speaking to Anton on the forum who has a few m-sport parts that I can get from him, but then I need the insurance to pay me out directly so I can source the parts and provide them to the panel beaters.

Sorry to see ur car in that shape dude.

Do me a favour, contact Eagle Ford on Louis Botha Ave. They do an awesome job and charge around R2k a panel. Provided you doing it cash from the 3rd party route.

This happened this morning, at the fault of the Volvo:

You will all be shocked if I tell you that that tiny impact is not economically viable to repair compared to the value of the car

I don't know what to do. Write off? If so, buy back and repair? Code 3? Take cash and get something else?

Car is still under finance.

No E39 should suffer this fate :(

agree and ouch! sorry about that...makes me wonder which insurance is the safe option to go owning an e39

My insurance is AIG through PIB Group. No hassles whatsoever.

Is there a chance that they will pay me directly? I can then get the parts and take the car to Dent Doc on Boksburg who I know will do the job proper, but it saves on costs rendering the car further away from being written off.

Sad to see. Hope you get it repaired with minimum hassle. There are enough knowledgeable guys here to help you find the best way forward. Good luck man

bud, u should claim 3rd party from the Volvo, so

1. it does not affect your premium
2. there is not note made against your claim history
3. get 3 quotes and submit to he's insurance, they will get an inspection done
4. don't go with the horse $hit they give you in terms of "repairing" the fender
5. go with new fender, fender liner, bumper, beading, pdc, etc..
6. they will pay you directly
7. get it sorted privately

keep this in mind a taxi clipped my small bro, on beyers, and those a$$holes are not insured(period), he just laughed and drove off

i just replaced the fender for 500 on my e46 320, with a matched one, and cleaned up the bumper and beadings

sorry again about the car bud

Shit sorry to see this. Not a nice feeling at all.
Please fix the car and don't let them write it off, however you do that.

Wonder what the damage is on the R400K Volvo..

They want to replace the fender, not repair it, which I agree with because there's a nasty crease on the wheel arch now.

Mr broker will handle everything and claim from his insurance. I'm not worried about it. I'm more worried about a mark against the car rather than on my name or claim record.

Stupid, yes I know.

I wonder too. 2014 model, that.

I asked the guy but he says he hasn't gotten a quote yet.

Should I tell him mine is written off and see what he says? :roflol:

do not sign any papers if you want to keep the car... once you do this the car belongs to them and you have little chance of getting it back because they have already sold it on...

negotiate with the insurance and tell them you want to fix the car yourself as it is worth way more to you than the book value

I am fairly certain there is a way to get them to pay you out directly, and then you carry out the repairs yourself. You will then have to take the car for an assessment after repair before they will insure it again.

Honestly, on such an old car, which has already depreciated so much, do you really think having this 'mark' on its history, which is purely cosmetic damage, is really going to prejudice resale more than the age, mileage, and the fact that it is a 5 series (compared to say a 3series)?

^^^ there's record here to prove that the damage is cosmetic. Refer any future would be buyer to this thread.
