A look at the competition

Seeing that the E90 is almost at the end of it's production cycle, it's interesting to see the new engines launched recently in the facelifted C Class. I'm sure the new 3 is going to give it a run for it's money, but for now, some pretty impressive numbers from Merc.

Some high level numbers on some of the engines (from Merc SA's site):

Diesel: C350CDI - V6
195KW/3800
620NM/1600–2400

Diesel: C250CDI - R4
150KW/4200
500NM/1600–1800

Both these diesels make the current 320d/330d look a bit cough, cough, underpowered, cough, cough - yes, it will be fixed in the new 3, but for now Merc is ahead of the "Diesel" game.

Yes, you don't need to remind me that the 3 series is dynamically better, blah, blah. Just pointing out that the competition has some nice engines too.... until the next 3 series comes along and ups the game once more.

I have seen a big difference in figures on paper and actual performance on the road especially on the Highveld. A 318iS could run with a VR6 or a C230.
That I have seen definitely. ( The underpowered COUGH COUGH ones)
Maybe not at sea level.
Lets not get over exited about Merc's or do we want to start taking it easy and falling asleep on the road?:roflol:

Don't just post power outputs, post capacity and weight as well and you'll see bmw is still ahead...

BMW E90 335D (There has been at least one spotted in SA) - 210kw 580nm

BMW E90 325D (not sure if SA has these) - 150kw 430nm

Sure we may be down on torque by a lil bit. but I dont think that the E90 Facelift is that far off.

im pretty sure the bms weigh less than the mercs so the extra torque will probably be negotiable...

by coincidence had a run-in this past week with a 350cdi (with my remapped 330d) that merc shunts.. could not pull away from him..

AFAIK, the merc has a slower 0-100 time than the E90 330d...

quite possible, all i can say from various "road trials" is that i can pull a car length on a e90 330d, i could not pull a car length on this spesific 350cdi.. would be interesting to see a run between a e90 330d and the 350cdi..
