Just drove from pta to durban at an average consumption of 6.8l/100km. drove at about 110kph with no aircon.wasn't totally practical but I wanted to know whats the best i could do. A friend did 7.5 l/100km in his 135i N55

Sounds about right. At that sort of low throttle position doing 100 - 120 km/h the econometer on my 330i shows 5 - 7 l/100 km on a level surface. Of course the moment you climb this changes, but then when going down a long hill with the throttle closed you are using 0 l/100 km! So far the highest and lowest average consumption figures right after filling up and reseting all meters: 37 l/100 km and 6.6 l/100 km :)

Thats not bad.. Considering all the traffic that was heading down that direction :)

We managed about 8l/100 in the 525i going down a few weeks ago. with aircon On & cruising at 5Km/h over the posted speed limit at all times..

and managed 8.7l/100km with my dad driving back up yesterday..

So yours is seriously not bad at all for a 3.0l engine..

i managed about 7l/100km in the 318i auto last year. cruising at the speed limit with cruise control set...

So seriously yours is pretty good I would say..

Thats not too bad considering my 530d does 6.1-6.6l/100km with the cruise control on 128km/h (GPS speed).

It didnt make sense setting the climate control at 18C when it was 17C outside. It's like a personal challenge that I have with the consumption figures. It does give us a good indicator as to the efficiency of these BMW engines. I would be curious to hear what the N54's are getting.

For daily driving I get about 11l/100km. Actually it generally works out to R1 per km. So essentially a trip from PTA to JHB return costs R100.

One of my buds who deals with Sandton traffic daily gets about 250km per tank!!!!

These cars aren't intended to be like econoboxes (thank goodness), but it is nice to know that on the open road it can sip fuel when not in full domination mode! :)

Well because the car can go over 250km/h very comfortably it makes sense that driving at 110km/h with that much power returns good consumption figures. Also unlike the lower powered cars, a 135i wouldn't need to push as hard to maintain a high speed.

I remember CAR mag had an interesting consumption comparison using various E46's as the benchmark and it was interesting how the larger capacity engines were increasingly more economical overall. And this was from the 318i to the 330i - iirc the 318i/320i were slightly better in town driving, but on the open road at higher speeds (above national speed limit naturally) the 325i, 328i and 330i were better. Makes sense since they would have higher amounts of reserve power and taller gearing I would think...

That is impressive for a performance engine.

 for actually driving like that all the way to Durbs. I've tried it a few times and got bored after 30 mins ....

That's quite impressive! I drove to Natal in February, trying to mostly stick to the speed limit :innocent:, but my best consumption was 9.3l/100km...

I've got an automatic N54 135i, and it was packed pretty full at the time.

Had to take a run out to a place just past Hermanus area on Saturday night with four up in the 330i - mostly sticking to the speed limit and being a Saturday night with the men in blue in full force, not to mention loads of drunk idiots on the road. But anyhow, at times did give it the beans a bit - total distance travelled was 343 km, average speed is shown as 94 km/h, and fuel consumption is shown as 8.8 l/100 km. I reckon if I wasn't in a bit of a hurry and made a proper effort I would have been able to improve the fuel consumption a fair bit, but where's the fun in that?!? :)
