I attended Angela's Picnic this past Sunday at Delta Park in Linden and really enjoyed the cars and the great atmosphere. Herr BMW snapped some pics of our cars together and I love them, his pics make my car look great :blowheart:

I forgot to add, I bought a new EGR thermostat from Goldwagen Delarey along with Motul antifreeze for around R470 all-in. It was pretty easy to install the new thermostat and refill the cooling system - Grant and I got all the bubbles out within a few minutes and could see the steady stream of water into the reservoir with zero bubbles evident.

The car's temp now sits at a constant 87C on the highway, dropping down to 85C on the downhills - in traffic the temp sits around 89-95 degrees so I am super happy. Consumption is also settling around 8l/100km - about 0.7l/100km improvement.

Happy days!

So Friday I got an OBD-II bluetooth dongle so I could keep an eye on things. The dongle works very well, and I can see a lot of info that one usually can only see via a proper diagnostics program (injection quantities, actual boost vs requested etc). But it appears my battery may be faulty. We tried to load software on the beast but being the difficult arse of a car it's proven to be, the map wouldn't write to the ECU.

I'll take the car to have the battery tested - the voltage when running off the alternator is 13.7-14v, and while off hangs around 12.2-12.6v. Might be a dying cell that drops the current to 10v when put under load perhaps. The car is al so lumpy on idle and quite smokey. Doesn't seem to be blue smoke so I think the fact that the dpf has been hollowed out has something to do with the cold start being out of whack.

Okay update time. The car was behaving strange for a few mornings, so I got an OBD dongle to keep an eye on things while on the move. I didn't pick up any errors, but the car was smoking pretty badly on cold start - a light grey smoke.

I checked my oil level and saw that the car had used about a liter of oil. I topped up the oil and decided to check the water level... That's when I was greeted by this lovely sight.

So I dropped the car off at No Problem Auto yesterday to have the car looked at as I didn't have the time to do it myself. Frikkie from NPA phoned me today and told me it's the heat exchanger that has failed. I got a price from BMW Menlyn at R1870-odd. I actually thought it was the head gasket that failed, as that would have explained the smoke and lumpy idle, but alas it seems one or two of the injectors are leaking.

Happy days.

sorry to hear martin, didnt the car come with a warranty, will they be contributing at all to the repair?

I have a warranty yes, Frikkie will contact my claims administrator today to get the claim approved.

I'm really regretting the decision to get a BMW, again. :blueCry:

I think you happened to get a lemon from the dealer, dont let change your opinion of the brand.

When i did my research into buying a BMW i accepted the fact that the preventative maintenance would more than a VW or Toyota.... more preventative maintenance normally, not always though means less hassles.

I did factor the higher maintenance costs into my purchase decision, but I really didn't expect that I'd have to spend the equivalent of my monthly installment on maintenance and repairs. So far I've had to spend R16k just to keep the thing running.

16k in a year or so? Thats 8k more than i spent in almost 4 years of owning my ex-330d. I agree with Sash!

I dont think that other brands maintenance cost is that much different to BMW. My mums Yaris costs R1600 for an oil service at Toyota. My 330d oil service was R1800 at the same time, at BMW. Okay, marginally higher

@arbee the yaris uses like 2l of oil vs 7 in the 330d:roflol: @spannie its seems like you just have bad luck. Only other car i know off that eventually needed an engine rebuild was Osiris's ex E46 330d

Yeah R16k in just over 6 months, it's really not funny any more :blueCry:

My installments on the car for the same period is just shy of R14k to put it into perspective.

I hope this is the last of my troubles with this car, but the mechanic said two of the injectors are leaking so my troubles may be far from over. I hate the idea of fixing everything on this car only for the next owner to have an epic car with no issues at my expense. :thumbdo:

Okay so yesterday I get a call from my warranty peoplesaying they don't cover the heat exchanger. A minute later Frikkie from No Problem Auto phones me saying the same. I ask him if I can come collect the car and pay him for the labour to fault-find the problem and for the part which he already ordered. He says he would be fine with that, but "the part is already 90% in the car". Fine I thought, I'll just have to pay then.

Around 16:00 the receptionist phones me and tells me my car will only be ready tomorrow. I ask her why and she responds saying that the parts only arrived 15:00-30. Now I get worked up, I phone Frikkie directly and ask him what the story is - now he tells me that the expansion bottle cap broke when they removed it because the oil in the cooling system deteriorated the plastic in the cap. I kid you not...

So I tell him to not put oil or antifreeze etc in the car and that I'm coming to collect the car... I get there and he gives me a bill for R4800 (he verbally told me it should be around R4300 all-in). I ask him to explain to me how the oil could deteriorate the cap, as the cap was fine the morning I brought the car to him - he couldn't give me a straight answer and tells me "the whole system is probably damaged because the oil has been in contact with the rubber and plastic. I couldn't believe someone could look me dead in the eye and tell me such bullshit!

Long story short, I paid him but asked for my money back for the antifreeze which was listed on the invoice. I just wanted to get out of there before doing something stupid - but had to wait around for 30-odd minutes for them to fetch my car from the carwash. The engine bay was as I had left it and was full of oil under the expansion bottle.

I am so disappointed with his attitude and his poor workmanship, I don't know how he manages to keep his doors open with the sub-standard service he delivers to his customers.

I got home and started the tedious process of flushing the oil out of the cooling system, it's probably gonna take me a week or so to get all the oil out.

Most of the oil is out, I'm running degreaser through the system to get the oil off the walls and channels, but I think it's gonna take a while.
