I only discovered them this month Sash, I haven't used them as a panelbeater before. Small shop, but low overheads and everyone seems to work together nicely so it creates a healthy work environment which I like.
No worries Andy, referrals are just better:rollsmile:

UPDATE:

I changed the main thermostat yesterday. Not a difficult job, just a bit tedious.

Pics:

You have to strip a few things out. Quite easy working on this car I must say.

Lots of space to work in.

First time seeing my turbo, it's really dirty and I'm surprised at the size of the thing, wasn't expecting it to be so big.

The blades are still good, with extremely little play on the shaft. Feels nice and solid and spins nice and freely.
The stuff on the inlet of the turbo isn't pitting, its a bit of dust that settled in there when I took the inlet pipe off the turbo. I cleaned it up nicely before re-fitting the inlet pipe.

Old thermostat out. Quite an easy job really.

The verdict - the temp went up to 97 eventually after hooning the car around my neighbourhood for a few kays and the radiator fan kicked in. This morning on the highway though, the temp only went up to 75 degrees. So the engine temp has gone up by about 15-20 degrees I'd say. But still not reaching 90. I'll have to get the EGR thermostat as well. Good thing I didn't get antifreeze yet as I had a suspicion that it was the EGR thermostat.

Well done Martin!

I did it exactly the same way. Do the difficult thermostat first, then do the EGR one if still not fixed. They similarly priced and the EGR one is super easy to do.

Expect less smoke and better fuel economy. Also smoother idling and running.

I'm glad I did the difficult one first, it's not difficult as you know, just time-consuming. My car gets up to 70deg faster than before, but the engine temp stays near the 80degree mark when I drive like I usually do (up from an average of 65-70degrees). I think I need to do the EGR thermostat as well - where did you get your EGR thermostat and for how much if I may ask?

I got both from BMW. Leo Haese in fact. Paid around R1500 for both. The one was R700 the other R800. Give or take, I can't remember exactly.

I got my roofrack aero inserts from Germany on Wednesday the 18th. The wind noise is MUCH less, but you still notice the racks above 110km/h. Well worth the money. I cut them about 5mm too long, in case they shrink in the sun...

Cool thanks bud, I'll do the EGR thermostat next month. Temps with the new main thermostat are up by about 10-15 degrees so I'm happy about that. Will have to see the affect on economy in the next few weeks.

i bought the Behr EGR thermostat at R450 from BEMOWs, the BMW part number is ground off on the part.

After changing both thermostats i notice the temps are much better, its gets up to 87-89 quite easy, lowest i saw since is 86 on the freeway, but in traffic it sits around 89-91.

Consumption wise.., the car has been used purely for my short runs and i was used to seeing around 10.9l/100km with the 19s i am getting around 10l/100km. havent used the car on the freeway since the change though.

Is BEMOW's in Van Der Hoff Road? That's not a bad price at all.

Geez and I'm complaining about my 8.1l/100km :skit:

That's the one.

My 19's coupled with the extra weight and the auto sucks.

So on the evening of the 23rd, I wanted to re-fit my belly plates. I started the car, reversed 4m, turned the steering wheel, lost power steering, and saw smoke coming out the bonnet... I wanted to cry.

I got out of the car bud couldn't see anything wrong in the engine. I figured that it must be steering related and checked to see if the power steering pulley was still turning, and it was. I started the car again and I had power steering again. I inspected the crank pulley and saw little pieces of rubber... Yet, crank pulley went bust.

I'm trying to see where I can come right with a good deal, so far the best bet is Goldwagen - they have a Continental pulley for R3200 so it looks like I'll be claiming from my warranty again. :hammerhead:

Don't cheap out on such a crucial part.
Common thing on the 30d motors, but a cheap one could see you replacing it far sooner.

The "cheap" one is a Continental part, so I doubt it's substantially worse than the OEM one. If I can find a decent used pulley I'd go for that. This car has cost me R10511 in maintenance in the first 4 months of owning it, I just can't afford paying R8117.17 excl labour for this pulley.

Andy FTMFW! Going to collect a crank pulley from him in an hour or so. What a champ!

On a side-note, I took out the droplinks last night and the front suspension knock is much less noticeable. I think I'll need to get new top shock mounts along with the new droplinks...

I fitted the crank pulley I got from Andy in about 1hr 15mins, if I had known that the aircon compressor doesn't have a tensioner (well not that I could see), then I would have saved at least 10-15mins :withStu: Basically I put the belts on the pulley, and then put the bolts in and torqued them down slowly in sequence. The serpentine belt was pretty easy to de-tension once I figured out which was the tensioner pulley. I also purchased an e-socket set seeing as there are so many e-sockets on this car. It was a cheap set from Midas for like R120, so I'm not complaining, the socket worked beautifully.

Pics of the new old pulley fitted:

I then had my car on the dyno at HM Auto in Sibenza on Saturday:

195.4wHp and 477Nm. I'm not quite sure how accurate these figures are, because there were cars that were down 50Hp, and some made okay figures. Will take the car to FR&R or KAR sometime to compare.

Really happy with the car now.

Waiting for the video to upload...

This thing with software and exhaust will be seriously fast. I realised that I'm only 20whp down on a E46 M3, and I'm up 200nm lol. Here's the video:
