Hi guys,

I have been told to replace valve seals, vaccum pump and profile gasket. The quote that i got from Forsdicks is too much. Where can i get a good job done on this in Cape town

Hi

My 2006 320i E90 has been given the grim diagnosis that its valve stem seals (and what ever else they find is wrong when taking the top off) needs to be replaced ... and this with only 109,000km on the clock! I've gotten the best quotes from 3 Service Centre and Zeemax. I would like to hear what people's experiences have been with these 2 workshops... any recommendations or warnings and why.

Thanks in advance!

I have a similar problem with a BmW 320i e90... Where can i can get it fixed properly

Oh No No No you do not have to remove the head. BMW does it without removing the head.

I suggest contacting the dealer that I use. I have sent you a PM

Got it, thanks. Gave them a call and it works out MUCH cheaper than any of the prices the other guys gave me, because they don't have to remove the head. Strange though that Forsdicks BMW also told me they have to remove the head, so I just hope this "short cut" doesn't cause any other damage. I'll update this thread once I've had the job done.

For background, symptoms are that when idle at a traffic light and then pull away, there is a puff of white smoke. The longer the stand at a traffic light or in traffic, the bigger the puff of white smoke. Checks around the engine and at the oil separator show no signs of any oil leaks or oil sweat.

Definitely valve stem seals. Was Exact same problem on my sisters car. Now its gone. They are good guys. Just make a booking and organise beforehand for transport to drop you off.

Let us know when you have it done. And your findings. Also the 40km drive back at a constant 120km/h will help to get rid of some of the carbon in your exhaust system that has built up due to the oil smoke

Right, so my car was done yesterday and I drove it for the first time again this morning, as they delivered it back straight to my house :bravo:

I must say, the service I got from the was awesome! Thanks Iceman007 for your help!

Now I can't feel much difference from just driving it and I didn't see any white smoke clouds in my rearview mirror, but I have to have someone else drive the car over the weekend so that I can drive behind them and see if there is still any smoke at all... just to confirm. Will post an update as soon as I have confirmed if the problem has been completely sorted.

Can Tou tell me plz . How much it wiil costs ??
I have exactly the same problem on my e90 320i 2005

Just an update for anybody else who needs to have this done. BMW Paarlberg now quotes R12,800 for this job (R8k of which is labour) :hammerhead:.

I'm considering going with Garage 808 who quoted similarly for the parts but labour is half that. Has anybody used them before?

Regards
Craig

Do you have a valve compressor tool to work with? You need one that is DOHC compatible due to the largeness of the head we have to work with. A simple model may work on the 4g15, but find one that will work with DOHC setups and you should be set. Replacement is easy enough but be sure to install the new units with the valve in place, install the protective sleeve over the valve top, then slide the seal on, and retract the valve lower in its bore so you can fit a deep socket over the seal and valve and tap it into place. I think that is the order to do it, but just make sure you dont rip the valve seal when installing the valve because it will make the seal useless and that valve will get lots of oil down onto its stem. If your car doesnt burn oil, which is rare for older 4g15s, then consider just doing the head gasket if you dont want to get too involved and are short on time. Basically if you are removing the valves, you may as well put them to the wire wheel brush to clean them up and remove the carbon and soot build up. Food for thought.

I wouldn't recommend Zeemax.
Quality of work is unacceptable.
They also do not look after your car at all.
They will take shortcuts getting things fixed.
For example i asked for a new exhaust bracket for my car, i expect at the least to get a aftermarket part if they can't get OEM but instead make a bracket that doesn't even hold the exhaust and charge me for it.
Thats just one simple example of the bad quality of work they do.
I can list a few issues i have had with them.
A friend from work sent his wifes mini to them for a simple water leak to get fixed and got the car back with the wrong parts replaced, and missing parts.

Resurrecting an old ghost with this reply-post lol. Not too sure if there is a 'name and shame' thread on this forum somewhere but I can say the same - if not worse NSFW things about BW Tech in Springs. They specialize in BMW's - breaking them I mean!

Greeting
I have a 320i bmw and it produces a white smoke when I start the engine and then fades away when the car is moving. I went to Europart at PMB and they told me that the problem was the worn-out valve stem seals and to replace them it would cost R12 600.
Are there any other alternatives or other rmi certified garages cheaper then this in PMB or Durban?

Can someone suggest the replacement in JHB? Really don't want to take the head off. Thanks in advance.

Hi,

We do the valve stem seals. What some of the members did is bring the vehicle in the afternoon and then we drop them off at the Gautrain and then they go back to JHB. Then 2 days later we collect them at the station and they collect their vehicle and then return home. We do it without taking the cylinder head off. Costs work out to around R9400. You can call us on 012 3663000, we have done a lot of them and also done loads of Fanatics vehicles.
We require the vehicle for 2 days, Strip, assemble, road test.

Regards

Hi All

New user and have similar symptoms to above. Some background

February I removed the Cat and had a straight down pipe installed. Petrol usage was 14.9/100km and now 9.6 traffic driving. Power Flow Randburg - excellent work!

Car started giving white smoke when it idles for a while or when I come to a stop about 3 months ago. I have to put about 1/2L oil once a month. Checked the engine bay and can't see any leaks etc. Also the coolant seems fine. Smell is horrid like burnt petrol and plastic. Or a REALLY old vehicle smell.

Its a 2010 320i Auto E90 with 177000kM's, currently having the AC compressor reconn'ed as that packed up last month smoking isn't any worse or better since the bypass while waiting for the compressor.

Would this also be valve stem seals?

Thanks.
