what a mean is the difference in fuel consumption between the 2.2l and the 2.5l is nothing, but the 2.5 goes way better...

yes the 3.0 will use slightly more fuel, but the performance gain is huge compared to the extra fuel used...

Okay, now I see what you are saying! That's true! Was initially trying to find a nice 325i for my Wife with decent mileage and good condition, unfortunately all the good ones were hiding at the time!

the 320i is not bad its just the 325i is better with no drawbacks

That's the thing. Took a 325i for a test drive and liked the performance - just that specific car was in horrid condition. Then decided to take another look at it the next day when I saw the 320i which was in mint condition by comparison. Then saw that it was the 2.2 motor and decided to take it for a test drive - was expecting it to be seriously pap but was pleasantly surprised! Not the same as the 325i of course, but still perfectly capable of putting a big smile on ones face!

Interestingly, I remember CAR mag had an article about consumption figures for various capacity engines, and they had various E46 models in this article. The best overall fuel consumption according to them was from the 330i down in reverse order to the 318i - quite interesting!
