Hello BMW people Im new to this forum and would like some info please. I have in the past had a number of BMW's E28 528i,E30 325i,E28 M5,E34 M5, E36 M3.never new always second hand.

I have never owned a diesel before but am toying with the idea. I would like to get a 320d and pay appro R60 to R70K maybe something with around 200 000KM+

BUT I have heard such conflicting information regarding the 320d, some poeple say they are constant problems turbo's, injectors, diesel pumps what is the truth are they any good over 200 000Km or not. I would be gratfull for any info regarding this car

Thank you
Colin

The E46 320d was unfortunately not the most reliable diesel at the time. Heard lots of people going through a few turbos on their cars even before 100K KM. However, there are also those with 200K KM on original turbos. Overall the E46 330d was much more reliable (except for those with auto gearboxes).

Many of the later e46 models had their turbo's exchanged by bmw with a call back so the turbo often has less milage than the car. However, I think if it has been looked after and you do the right preventative measures, you will have a good solid car!

YES ! :joy: Bud, rather save up a bit more for a 330d manual. Then you know you should not have gearbox or turbo trouble. A friend of mine has one, that has just short of 400 000km without TB or GB issues and still going strong :joy:

The 120d' are now going for under R100gran. At 200 000 Ks you could expect the turbos to start to whine...but the second/third generation common rail turbos go like clappers with a tune ...also prices on replacement turbos are not as expensive as it used to be.

Can only confirm what Charles posted!
We have a lot of experience especially with x20d and they are virtually "Bullet Proof" and if something goes wrong they are easy to fix!

welcom colin to the forum.

i would go for the newer 320 d,e90 shape.but that my personal opinion.

and this is coming from some one who hates a turbo,my golf left me on the side of the road in a dangerous area when the turbo went.

you can also ask narato,he has a nice one in red

cheers from another colin

No issues with turbo yet (touch wood)

These things are bullet proof

Hope you come right Collin
