ET was here said:
intermittent crank sensor ?
intermittent cam sensor ?

I would agree

My 530d also gave the same symptoms
First start of the day normally no problem
after short trips, when the engine was just warming up, NO START...$#$@ !
after long trips, with temperature optimal it would start

seems in my case the cam shaft sensor was breaking down at a very specific temperature range

the symptoms when it was faulty was crank and crank crank and crank, almost to the point of burning the starter motor out or flattening the battery
every now and then during the cranking phase it would "almost" sound as if it was about to fire up, but then dies again
Waited for it cool down, hour later, no problem starting

I was adviced here on these forums to consider the cam or crank sensor, crank sensor is a big job, cam sensor is a quick 5 mins DIY, so I opted for the cam sensor, "viola" 5 years later starts first time every time.

The diagnostic also didn't pick up anything like an intermittend cam sensor, so it was stroke of luck for me.

It's two Relays that need to be changed, one sits in the Bonnet by the DME, the other inside on the left under the glove box.
