Hi Guys

I wanted to hear from owners of the E90, how reliable they have been ? What you spend yearly on maintenance? What big ticket items need to be checked when purchasing ? And lastly who are the good diesel specialists around Jhb?

Have mine for 10 years now. Just normal service maintenance such as oil and brakes. Vibration damper also has to be replaced around 150000kms another then that no trouble

I have a 2011 model that I bought 2 years ago with 94000km , I am now on 117000km , honestly this is the best car ive ever owned.
besides normal oil changes and filters the only issue I had was a worn control arm bush, I decided to replace all 4 arms with poly bushes and have them do the stabilizer links as well, which was around R7000.

my tyres were worn but I replaced them with non runflats which I'm happy with

I've had mine for about 3 years now. Got it at 100 000 kms and currently close to 200 000 kms. As long as you keep giving it proper services with good oil you should be sorted. Replaced my vibration dampener at 150 000 kms which is about a 7 grand job, other than that only service items have been replaced.

Oh and find someone who can sort you out with tires. Run flats aren't cheap

bought mine about 5 years ago. I had the main pulley give trouble but it is something they say should be changed eventually. Generally very reliable car.
Currently I have a fuel pressure pump problem, but its the first time the car is hassling me. its on 170k kilos. I wouldn't hesitate buying a 320d.

These are very solid motors and as reliable as can be if maintained properly. The vibration dampner is the only "semi-bigticket item" as stated above. Depending on whether you are looking at the N47 or M47 motor, some minor preventative maintenance should be done such as decatting the car, blanking the EGR(on M47 motor) and blanking the swril flaps(M47 motor),but these are all very easy and cheap to get done and wouldn't cost more than 2-3grand in total and adds to piece of mind tremendously.

But all-in-all these cars are very reliable which is why so many people on the forum drive 320ds.

Bought mine on 80000km's and am now at around 155000km's. Been servicing it myself which is fairly easy.

Replaced the Vibration Damper which so far has been the most expensive item.

So far has been extremely reliable and easy to run.

Thanks guys, generally what do services cost ? Who services your cars ?

I take mine to BMW
they usually run an OIL Service special once a year.
This year was R1190, I had also had the microfilters and fuel filters changed, which was an additional R1600 +/-

I just did my service using original bmw oil, oil fitter and air filter and it cost me R1180

Bmw have an oil service special twice a year and it costs about the same.

Contrary to belief they are actually cheap to maintain.

Would someone mind educating me on the Vibration Damper issue? My motor is the N47S. 2L Twin Sequential Turbo Motor.

Just purchased my 320d m sport LCI about 2 months ago. I must say I am absolutely loving the car, no issues to speak of. Had it serviced at garage 808 recently and was very impressed with their level of professionalism.

With that being said,
Oil service + filter +/- R1800
Brake fluid flush +/- R450
Diesel filter change +/- R1000
Air filter change +/- R900

Would recommend this car to anyone who asks :praise:

If bmw are selling you the correct dampener for 3600 that's the same as what I paid at GW last year, good deal. Remember to buy the bolts and belt too.
