Hi Guy's

Quick question i have the 2002 320d and after doing just a small trip
say to work and back witch is only 5km for me the car smells heavy of burning oil even when you put the fan on inside the car you smell it quite badly if you do take it out say on the main road and drive it proper
when you stop and open the bonnet you see the burning oil smoke coming
from the turbo side i see there is a type of breather filter or something there next to the engine mounting as i see the engine mounting is
soaked with oil
Spoke with someone yesterday and he told me the car is breathing and i should remove completely the crank case breather valve,is this advisible because what do you put in its place ? i told him the turbo was done about six months ago because that is what the dealer where i bought it told me,but i see the cat is still there can the car be breathing
because the cat could be blocked to some degree ?
Or what else can cause the breathing ?

Take the crank case breather valve , clean it and replace it and see what it does after that .

I DO KNOW THAT IT HAS ONE OF THE NEW TYPES NOT THE OLD TOILET ROLER TYPES COULD IT BE THAT IT IS STUCK OR SOMETHING BECAUSE I READ HERE ON THE FORUM THAT IF YOU HAVE THE NEW TYPE IT DOESN'T HAVE TO BE CHANGED OR CLEANED ?

where are the diesel guys?

this is most definitely not normal and no its not the car 'breathing' whoever told you that does not know what he is talking about...

hopefully someone with more diesel knowledge will pop in :)

Have the same problem But after the turbo was replaced.
what I have been told is that there is some excess oil hanging around in the engine from the work that was done and that is burning off.

Problem is to get there to clean it is a nightmare.

It does not happen every time.

So help would be appreciated.

To the OP. I would take the car back to whoever replaced the turbo and ask them to fix their half baked work. What you are describing is not normal. And for you to try and fix it is aldo not a good idea because it may not be the filter. Unlikely that this has anything to do with the catylitic converter.

Breater unit is R1006 at the dealer. Cant get it at goldbagen or midas. So will clean and check first.

Ever considered that the oil supply or return pipe could be damaged to the turbo and leaking the oil onto the exhaust housing and causing the smoke...

Take it back!

oil is leaking out somewhere it should not, and landing somewhere it should not..

meaning it could be the oil feed spraying oil on the exhaust manifold, or hot turbo, oil from center housing, seals, breather, inlet, ect. landing ont the hot manifold or turbo..

only one way to get to the bottom of this one really, start stripping to find the leak..
