Like @Nish_H and @r0ckf1re I have decided to get a cheaper daily runaround car.

The roads in Midrand have deteriorated over the past few months. Coupled with more traffic (from new complexes opening up) and power outages, traffic is just getting worse. Driving at night, especially in the rain, is nerve wracking as one tries to avoid potholes that become invisible.

Driving a sportscar daily in these conditions is like taking a supermodel out to McDonald's every day. The sense of occasion gets lost and it's also not good for anyone's health.

I have decided on a daily runner that will be up to the task of taking the knocks of Midrand traffic. It also needs to be fuel efficient and act as a temporary family car if the Volvo has any issues (so, needs to go long distance occasionally).

I will create a separate thread to show what I will get.

It will have to be one of the Indian made cars (though not necessarily an Indian brand) given that they seem to handle our 3rd world roads better than the Europeans. All will be revealed in the next 3 weeks.

Funny thing is, unless comparing with Germany or Switzerland, SA roads are in much better condition than EU generally.

But I hear you, Midrand is a clusterfuck lately for some reason.

The car has officially become a weekend car. Thinking about a Ctek charger, but I think driving it on the weekends is sufficient to keep the battery going. Will monitor this.

Using the Cover Pause feature on Naked Insurance for weekdays results in such a saving that it basically pays for the insurance on my daily driver. On the flip side, pausing the cover on my daily driver on the weekends also gives some extra saving too.

I strongly recommend a trickle charger. Weekend drives will probably keep it from going flat, but it will significantly reduce the lifespan of the battery.

I purchased a CTEK for the Supra, as sometimes it gets used only every 10/11 days so the charger was a must. Also recommend that you get one even if driven on weekends.
With the purchase of my daily, even the wife’s GLA is hardly used with her mostly working from home. This week her car didn’t start, and had to give it a charge, and now I’m thinking of getting another CTEK for the Merc.

You can pause/unpause your cover using the Naked app as and when needed if I'm not mistaken

Nice to ask - it is a good feature.
It is on the app - you just tick "Resume Accident Cover" and it all works seamlessly.
There is a pro rata calculation for the portion of the month that is paused.

If the App fails or there is no internet connectivity, then you can call their call centre to activate the cover.

A random update...

I took the car out for a 200km breakfast run recently on some quiet roads to Cullinan. Its been ages since I did that run.

Oddly, it felt uncomfortable driving this car. I don't know if my daily driver (EcoSport) has spoiled me in sitting high up and being detached from the action on the road surface. Feeling every bump and undulation on the road feels irritating now, whereas a year ago it felt exciting on this same route. Also, I ended up switching the sports exhaust off, because it felt too noisey. Shock, horror...

Am I getting too old or am I just getting too used to my daily driver? Maybe a little bit of both.

Anyway, the car still performs faultlessly. But, I am thinking if maybe I have graduated to needing a high speed, GT car rather than a sports car.

There are few low mileage 6 series coupes out there that are very well priced and I can imagine a 640d being an epic GT cruiser/bruiser. But, I know that I will still long for the thrill of the Cayman on occasion.

Anyway, just some random thoughts for now. I have gone through too many emotions with the Cayman to let her go, so hopefully I get to reignite the sparkle after a few more spirited drives.

Agree. I also need to do more exercise so my lower back does not complain
