2010 320d LCI Engine update

I recently upgraded from 2005 320d (E90) to 2010 320i to 2010 320d (couldn't handle the slooow 320i with high consumption). The 2010 320d is spec'd with the 130kW version. Does anyone know if BMW does an update to this engine to bring it to the newer spec 135kW and 380Nm? Phoning the dealership is a mission - I get put through from person to person and no one seems to know. I know there was an update on the 125kW engines (or was it the 130kW one?).

I know the engine is still the same - N47D20, but were there physical changes to get to 135kW? I'm not keen on an after-market software upgrade - I just want the 135kW if BMW offers it (it will be free...).

Any insight into this would be much appreciated!

LCI is 135kw. I have a 2010 320d LCI and its the 135kw version.
Hi Sabretooth. Thanks for the reply. Mine was registered 1/1/2010 and has the 130kW spec (it is the LCI - AFAIK the first 320d's LCI came out with 130KW). I definitely would prefer the 135kW though. :)

Correct the first of the LCI's manufactured in 2009 put out 130KW, 350NM

Those manufactured from 2010 onwards put out 135KW, 380NM

Interesting.. I thought all LCI's were the current spec engines.. Not 100% sure what the changes are though.. Ask them to update all software on the car and see what happens..

As S1NGH says; 2008 - 2009 LCI 320d's have 130kW 350Nm. Manufactured from 2010 have 135, 380. 5kW doesn't sound like much, but 30Nm definitely does! I know i.t.o. 0-100 it only makes a 0.4s difference. The main difference is on the move. The new spec in 4th, 5th and 6th is significantly faster than the 130kW version. I'm quite happy with 130kW 350Nm. But +5, 30 would be nice if it's just a software upgrade.

I'll take the car to the dealership and ask someone in person. I once phoned about my 115kW and they told me there was only an update for the 125kW versions. So I'm hoping the same for 130kW's.

Either way, I'm so glad to have replaced the i with the d. Going from average consumption of 9 to 14 and not being able to accelerate up hills was really starting to bother me. Now I'm back down to 9 (I drive a lot of hills) and when those torques push you into the seat - what a feeling!

Hi
The car's going in next week and I'll find out. From what I've heard and read, I'm hopeful. It seems that it's the exact same engine just with different software (which would make sense since these cars can be chipped to 160-170kW. I'll post when the car's been in.

pls let me know, which dealership r u taking it too?

Menlyn Auto. I don't know which dealership would have the best knowledge, but it sounds like the service consultants at Menlyn Auto are useless in terms of knowledge about software. But while I'm there I will make sure I get a proper answer.

Right, the car is at Menlyn Auto and they will have a look. I have a list of things for them to check, so I can post the results of it all when I've fetched the car.

1. When the engine is switched off there is a sound like a ratchet. Could be normal, but just checking to make sure. I don't remember a sounds like this on my 320i or previous 320d.
2. I asked them about the gearbox - it stays at about 1800rpm while accelerating easily. Also it revs before it changes gear.
3. The suspension feels worn - the car dives when applying brakes, and this felt very different from my previous 3's.
4. The PDC beeps randomly when there is nothing behind the car.
5. When listening to the tuner, if I open or close the windows, there is interference on the radio.
6. I asked if there was an update to bring the engine to the 2010 spec.

There was something else I forgot to ask them about, and I can't even remember what it is now. I will post the results for the sake of common knowledge.

Great, so it's all good news.

All the things I listed are normal or no problem (although I know the PDC and radio interference is there - but these aren't issues).

About the software update, from what I was told, it takes 6 to 9 hours (so they have to keep the car overnight) and motorplan will only do it if it is necessary. If you want to do it and it's not necessary, then it will cost something. I was told R900 - R1000, but the consultant said he could be wrong. I'll take it that's the amount, and if I find out exactly how much it does cost, I'll post that. For R900, I think it's worth it!
