Thanks I appreciate it and I made an error, according to the ad its a 2003 not 2002

No problem bud. Still can't be a 2003 either as I said they only came to South Africa in 2004.

Have you actually spoken to the seller or viewed the car? Paste the link to the advert and we'll confirm it's probably a scam or something of the like.

It's not going to hurt to go look at the car. But maybe take someone with you who knows the cars. It certainly looks the part, and it might just be a faux pas on the side of the seller as to the year.

Get the VIN, run it and see what it comes up with. It'll get you the right year etc. The guys here offer the best advice, especially the E46 M3 owners and past owners, so you can't go wrong with them. But like I said you've got nothing to lose by having a look.

Look, if it appears too good to be true, it is. I would proceed with EXTREME caution. The fact is, there is no such thing as a cheap M3. If it costs R90k, it likely needs R150k+ spent on it.

Keep saving, and keep searching for the right example that has been properly looked after. While you are doing that, do your homework on all the mechanical risk areas of an E46 M3 - knowledge is key here if you want to manage your maintenance cost expectations properly, and not end up with a nasty, expensive surprise.

Feel free to PM me with questions.

This could possibly be a coded car at R90k...go have a look, something is up with this deal cos the car looks fine on the pics, either that or there is a "one" left out of the sale price.

From the photos I can tell the rear bumper has had an impact and been repaired..

Fortunatley it is not a pre-requisite to be a mechanical expert to be part of the forum and post threads for advice and to learn.

No one here is.

Glad you were able to get some clarity on your concerns. Keep looking, keep asking questions no matter what and you will find your dream car.

The converse of this would be that it is ill-advised to go into E46 M3 ownership without having at least some understanding of mechanical risk areas.

By telling him that he is not ready to own an E46 M3?
Remind me not to ask you for feedback in the future

I appreciate that you are defending people who have less (or no) mechanical knowledge, however I cannot in good conscience advise someone to buy an E46 M3 (and a high mileage ones at that) without at least having a rudimentary understanding of what they are getting themselves into. Hence, I stand by all my comments in this thread. I think that is a fair position to adopt, and in the best interest of anyone wanting to pursue this dream.
