does not look too difficult to repair you just need to get a good alu welder in to do the job...

I would weld the parts together then weld extra plate over the sides where it ripped for extra strength

When my rear subframe ripped out they did the repairs for R7 000.00. Discounted from R9 000.00. Hope its not as much as mine

I would take a closer look at why it tore, afaik this is not something that happens with the e39. my guess would be something was loose, not mounted properly or too much play somewhere...

perhaps the diffmounts were toast + prop mount etc etc causing excess movement which perhaps lead to fatigue and ultimately failure...

perhaps the diff itself wasnt torqued up properly...

I wonder if this was caused by perhaps improper lifting of the car during its earlier life?

Hope you can get it sorted without too big hole in your pocket.

As Sean said - take out the entire subframe, re weld the bracket and reinforce it with an additional plate.

Regarding the collapsed pinion bearing...... maybe first get the subframe sorted and take the car for a drive. Analyse again, because I cant see how that also went, unless the car was driven for a sustained period with the broken diff mount

Yup, It's aluminium.

All diff bushings were replaced by the previous owner. I did some research on M5 Board and apparently this is pretty common because it's aluminium.

I am still awaiting the final quote and have asked them to quote on fabrication of reinforcement brakets. Dinan makes a reinforcement kit specifically for that point.

I'll see what the diff qoute comes to but while it's out of the car I think I should just get it done so I won't have to pay for that labour another time.

Holding thumbs that I dont have to sell my body... again...

best of luck with this setback, from the distance i last saw your car it really looked like a mint original "example" of the e39 m5.

I wonder how the e39 540i rear subframe differs to the e39 m5... I may know of a e39 540i one thats available...

Please take notes, I have the 530d e39 as u know and as far as torque is concerned its the closest to the m5 with 410nm.. think m5 is 500odd.. when im finally done with all my issues i'd like to do software which might send torque to m5 levels.. in which case im also at risk of a failure like this.

all e39's have aluminium subframes...

My M5 is a pretty great example of what's out there. But shit can happen to even the most mint collectors level vehicles.

The dinan kit is for all E39s so I am thinking the subframes may all be pretty similar.

I found an example of the type of reinforcement here: http://www.m5board.com/vbulletin/e3...n-rear-subframe-differential-brace-kit-2.html

Just got my quote.

Total of R2940 for the subframe repair and reinforcement. At first I was like "not bad"

But then...

Diff Repair: R9370

Ouch :skit:

Damn man.... I didnt realise the diff was also in need of repair itself... thought only the sub frame was shot

Not sure if I put it in the post about the subframe. The pinion of the diff is busy collapsing and it is leaking so it needs to be sent to specialists for a rebuild.

With the 540i @ 440nm we in the danger zone there too...:mmm:

The diff tearing away from the sub frame is common on the e46 M3, noticeable when removing the boot carpet

no subframe rips out the body... diff stays in the subframe :)
