2001 E39 525i mixing oil and water

Hi Guys,

This morning while driving i noticed my car losing and gaining power, stopped at home, cheacked the oil and everything to find this

What would be the most likely cause , i have also found a couple of metal shavings in the oil filter which i replaced a couple of weeks ago

Metal Filings in oil filter, Rod bearings..

my 320i had this weird rattling noise that really did not sound like a bearing knock.

until the day it lost power and Struggled to stay running. :blueCry:

When removed, bearings were beyond dead.

Sorry buds. That looks like HG to me. Metal shavings is also bad news

it may or may not be mixing...hard to tell from that cap. Condensation on the oil cap can deceive sometimes
I'd drain the coolant and if its mixing then you'll not miss the oil in there for sure.
The metal shavings in your oil filter sound scary, and coupled with power loss and gain - sounds worrying
Is there smoke coming out of exhaust- what colour?
Usually a blown head gasket will cause a lot of smoking and power loss, plus overheating
Have this checked out by an experienced workshop asapmgwaiting:

1. It may or may not be mixing...hard to tell from that cap. Condensation on the oil cap can deceive sometimes - This is very true. Cars that stand for periods do have condensation.

2. Metal filling could be oil filter failure as well. not very common on automotive, more common on Agricultural machines.

Best is to have it checked out ASAP. It could even be engine or gearbox oil cooler failure. Had it on a C230 Auto many years back.
