This weekend I did very little work on the car.
Changed the center draglink as the old one had covered 200ks and it was worn on the steering arm side.

All nuts torqued to 68Nm with the exception of the tie rod bolts which are 27Nm.

So eventually I removed the Right Hand Bank cylinder head.

I am so impressed with the 4,4 V8 the cylinders look in excellent condition and there is no play on the piston whatsoever.

I shall be posting pics a little later.

Did I mention how impressed I am?

This is what 250000 well serviced kilometres looks like
10112012960.jpg

RH gasket was sealing properly with no leaks between the oil passages into the water channels.

I shall have to have the head pressure tested

I cleaned the piston crown on Number 1 cylinder just to see what it looked like.

I intend to clean all of them by using a brass brush in circular moves with oil and petrol mixed.

Also a little fine steel wool at the end with petrol only.

I was to cheap to go and buy the tools so I improvised in stripping the heads which is not difficult if one takes ones time with it and has help.

So for the V8 experts out there.

The gaskets are ok with no sign of oil intruding into water passages.

Heads also look ok although they will need valve guides as I very much doubt that the guides will be good after 250k.

Any idea where the oil may be intruding into the water?

Your suggestions will be appreciated.

A few pictures of the water pump. The play on the shaft was a lot and the pump rumbled when spun.
Pump had been recently replaced from BMW and was on the car for roughly 18-24 months with maximum 40000km.
At least I think I know where the rust marks come from.

I have really taken my time in examining the engine whilst stripping it as it is my first time and I am not familiar with it on a hands on basis.

A few questions come to mind:

Here is a close up of Right Bank cylinder 3 and 4
10112012960.jpg

The front of the engine has the water galleries open and the gasket is the same shape.
From cylinder 2 to cylinder 4 the galleries are closed with little holes only and the rear most galleries are blanked off on the gasket but not the head or the block.

Here is a pic of the head where you can clearly see the shape of the water galleries

here is one of the gasket

I have not been able to establish the thinking behind that design any thoughts?

This is what the head looked like whilst on.

I stripped the right head and cleaned it so that it gets ready for the engineers.
By stripping myself I get to see what is going on and the condition of the components so that I am in a position to discuss things with the engineers as opposed to hearing stories.

Valves out.

Valve springs cleaned and marked.
I shall do the assembly of the head once the machine work has been done as I have a particular order by which I do things.

I guess its delicate and very expensive Chinese mechanism gave up the ghost when it met ZEB

What all you having done at the engineers?

Respect on the work done so far :praise:
A very slight skim on the head surface to clean the gasket imprint.

Valve stem seals

Slight reworking of the seats

The heads are ok after 250k due predominantly to the motor having had 10k oil changes and a sympathetic driver.

A small update on progress which has stalled due to head gaskets not being available until end Feb as well as a bottom gasket set which had to be ordered.

Heads are done at the engineers and will be collected during the week as time allows.
I shall post when collected.

So I collected the head gaskets from Alert Engine Parts after a lentghy wait.

The past week I have been hard at work cleaning the engine in preparation for assembly.

Gasket material was removed with steel wool 1500grit flatting paper doused in ATF. Copious amounts of ATF.
Pistons were equally cleaned with a scapper and steel wool doused in ATF.
I have found ATF to be an excellent detergent. Thank you Chris for the brilliant suggestion even though your wheel alignment is out.

This is the gunk I drilled out the transmission oil cooler.
Once the oil cooler gets blocked the transmission overheats and it retains gear at random.

So boys and girls (all 2 of you) a further update.

I refurbished the VANOS thanks to "we sell awsome shit" Sean who had the tools as well as seals delivered to me on time .....thank you Sean you the man!

For anyone contemplating a VANOS refurb be aware that you need the special pressing tool to complete the procedure correctly as without it you will be throwing good money after bad.
Speak to "moranor".

An assortment of pics follows.

Front of block after a combination of ZEB oven cleaner and PREPSOL.
When using ZEB be mindfull that one needs to work quicly.

Oil pump
Bolts are all ok with nothing loose.

Camshaft prior to cleaning and installation shown as an example of the oil discolouration.

Head ready for cams.

VANOS side of camshaft.
Visible 3 rings each at R120 that need to be replaced

All new rails BMW price at roughly R4k which is R1,5k to much by comparison to overseas.

Setting cams to TDC the "boer maak 'n plaan" way.
