At the risk of being boastfull which is not the intention that is the view that the majority of cars get with the convertible:rollsmile:

Two allroads? I l have a huge soft-spot for them, but aren't they rather a money-pit as far as maintenance is concerned.

They are actually very accomplished cars for what it is they were designed for.
A little heavy on fuel due to the short gearing otherwise pretty much normal when it comes to standard maintenance provided you do it yourself.

Their weak point being the air bags, however if one cleans them with a mild detergent soap to get rid of the mud once in a while and then coats them with paraffin or turps the bags go for a long time.
The brown one has 197 000km and only now had the front airbags changed and kept the original shocks which are still perfect.

The grey one has 320 000km and it has a whistling turbo and smokes a bit and it is also on its second set of front airbags which were done roughly 50 000km ago. As soon as I am done with the 7 I shall be pulling the motor on the grey one for work on the turbos and heads.

Sounds like you maak uit van motors !

So a engine transplant from one vehicle to another should be no problem for you. Say a S62B40 in a E30 :fencelook:

sorry a1exander dont know that Vanos :( but most are a mission because they are part of the cams... the only easy ones i have found so far are the m52tub and the m54 because they come off without affecting timing :)

Im guessing they should be similar to the e36 vanos setups
have a look at the euro M3 seal replacements they are done with no special tools...

No problem that is easy it fits like a glove with not to much hassle.
The only hassle is that parts are expensive for those motors.

I've read that the harness is the headache and the management system, if you want to use the OEM system.

Wow you've been busy. But does look like fun and hard work at the same time.

I take it Chester wont turn your harness in to a chew toy.

Kobus, tires will last a day in a build like that.

:nonono:'I'm a responsible driver.

Whatever :roflol::roflol: I thought I was a responsible driver , old guy with a e34 ....." Raybimmer 540i" on youtube . If the M60 does that with 1800 kg then what with 1250 kg e30 body ? ( Ok was a once off show )

Chester insist that he be driven around

I want to search and find if I can loosen the Vanos system in such a manner so as not to buy the special tools which are close on to R6000

Best antitheft device ever!!
How do you persuade the stupid dealers to sell special tools to you?

Visit them with Chester?

Special tools can be bought from the Tool Shop in Strijdom park or brought in from the USA

So yesterday we started stripping the ancillaries on the motor.
Due to the fact that as we strip we clean pack and mark it is at best a laborious and extremely non enjoyable undertaking.

Just wanted to mention that if you notice a leak under the Vanos solenoid do not bother tightening the bolts rather change the round gasket around the solenoid. They do leak from there over time.

Earlier I had mentioned that the left engine mounting was broken....not bad after 220ks

01072012699.jpg

"Sweaty" front main oil seal. If this was any other car I would have said "failed main oil seal"

01072012718.jpg

Right hand side chain tension piston.

No galling or scoring of any significance.
It will be changed for new on assembly.

01072012725.jpg

Right hand cylinder head Vanos unit with solenoid still installed. Incidentally the motor is remarkably clean with zero sludge to be seen. I guess the 7000km oil change intervals are worth it.

Are the tools for the vanos similar to the e36 where the tool fits over the square on the back end of the camshaft ?

Yes it is basically the same kit but obviously spaced differently for the application.
