2000 e38 740 Motor out

To give you a little bit of background on my wife's car.

It was bought in 2002 with 30 000km from Auto Alpina in Boksburg.
I paid R360 000 for the car and it was the best money I have spent having enjoyed 205 000trouble free kms. The car gets oil serviced every 7 000km with synthetic oil and has the rest done as per BMW service intervals.

Last year one of teh head gaskets decided to give up through old age as the car did not overheat but it seems to have blown a gasket and it was mixing oil in the water without overheating.

It is my intention to do the head work as well as new cam chains and guides.
I shall equally take the gearbox valve body to ZF for them to give it an overhaul as the car lately started holding gears on the odd occasion.
If anyone has any input in that regard or anything else I would be gratefull to hear from you.

My intention is to post pics of the work undertaken so that I may have the communities input as I go along.

Please remember that my intention is to re build the motor to "standard spec" with the exception of an M60 inlet manifold for 2 reasons.

1 I need a reliable car that goes and goes
2 I do not have the funds available to over capitalise on what to all intents is a slow(although at the coast it does "chirp" the rears) heavy gas thirsty family transporter.

Front bumper removed. If anyone wants to know how please ask.

Radiator removed along with a few other things

Engine harness disconnected from control boxes. That is a most simple procedure as everything is either plug specific or terminal specific so you cannot go wrong in just unplugging things.

I love the way that BMW have constructed the e38 it is as strong as a Bull and here gents I am not reffering to the Blue Bulls.

I removed the fuel rail from the Injectors as it is a lot easier to do then to remove the injector plugs first and then remove the fuel rail with the injectors attached.

Please also let me record that I have a 4 car garage which has 3 cars in it and the rest of the space is filled with what my wife calls "junk".

So the stripping was undertaken in my driveway much to my neighbours annoyance as my driveway often looks like " pearl harbour "

Kobus the torque in that motor is rated at "9 456 780 Nm" it would rip an E30 to shreds

I first removed the inlet manifold as I did not want the lifting chains to crunch against it. I was not sure if I would have enough clearance as my levelling bar is quite short.

The famous heater valve system which last was priced at R2800 when I changed mine.

At that price I was not going to just ignore it so here is a pic of my R2800 heater control valve.

Ermmm did I mention that the valve is R2800?

Front main oil seal looks as though it is sweating.
Please remember BMWs do not leak.....they sweat :D

Nice work,

You don't happen to know how much a heater valve cost do you:rollsmile:

Actually now that you mention it I should have said so earlier :flyfun:
It is R2800 for one
At least it was when I bought it I am almost sure it R6 000 by now if not R12000 or some other ridiculous price.

This is a pic of "Pearl Harbour"
The silver Allroad is mine The brown Allroad is Chesters although Chester is known to commandeer the silver Allroad on the odd occasion and the silver e36 belongs to my son Alexander.

Highly recommend that the right hand side exhaust manifold is removed just about here or it will foul against the steering box. You will have noticed in the previous pic that the bonnet is raised to a 90 degree position. The bonnet brackets are drilled and tapped so as to allow a bolt to be inserted and fastened that way there is no danger of it flipping backwards on the screen or on your head.

30062012684-1.jpg

Compare the left hand clearance to the pic before.

30062012683.jpg

Out the engine bay and having some Q10 sprayed on the exhaust manifold nuts Leonard did you hear what I said? NUTS

Oh btw this is Alexander I mean the real Alexander I am just an impostor.

30062012687-1.jpg

Did anyone say Beeeeeeeg?

30062012697.jpg

For our experts can you see anything strange on the colouration of the exhausts? Right bank no4 looks peculiar to me with what almost looks like blow by but it is not.

30062012694.jpg

Left hand engine mounting broken.
I shall need to replace both now so if anyone has any ideas on how I can save some money I am all ears.

30062012693.jpg

Right hand of engine bay you can see the steering box is huge and it interferes with the pre cat.

30062012692-1.jpg

A pic of the wiring harness.
I applied some heat on to it prior to total removal from the gearbox and engine.

For 12 years and +200km it is still in pretty good condition.
My intention is to clean it with paraffin whilst keeping it "warm" with a hair dryer and lay it out in what would be its normal position.

I mentioned earlier that the brown Allroad belongs to Chester.
Here is a picture of Chester and btw Chester insist that he be driven around as he still has not managed to get his drivers licence.

You are correct the bottom stud was loose and had drifted away from the exhaust manifold thus causing a leak mixed with oil from the cylinder head cover gasket.

It is a bit of a mess now that I have had a close look at it.

I want to search and find if I can loosen the Vanos system in such a manner so as not to buy the special tools which are close on to R6000 as I will only use them once and it will be a waste of money.

I recall some time back that I had read somewhere that if the motor was placed on to Top Dead Centre one could remove the Vanos unit and replace it without the special tools?

I guess a bit of searching is in order.
If anyone knows about it please give me a shout:thumbs:

Seriously impressive. I'll be following this thread with interest.

Two allroads? I l have a huge soft-spot for them, but aren't they rather a money-pit as far as maintenance is concerned.
