2 Questions - BMW E90 320i (possibly general questions)

Hi guys,

Like teh topic reads, I have 2 questions:

1. My oil level, for the past week has shown up very low when doing a manual check whilst driving. It's about 1/10th from the Min marker. I don't want to continue driving the car (might cause unnecessary wear maybe) until it shows me the 1L warning so is it recommended to add about 800ml of oil?

2. The car is due for one or other service. The OBC has a pic of car that looks as if it's hoisted on a lift. My manual tells me that this indicates that 'the next service is due'. What service exactly is my question?

The car is out of plan and I need to prepare myself $$$ wise for the services. In other words I need to know how much I will be in for.

Any help will be appreciated :thumb:

This would usually be an air filter and oil change. Should cost you around R1500 for all parts including labor.

Thanx Guys,

Haven Motors worked on my car last and was thinking of going there. Will call Zeemax to find out how much they will charge.

WRT the oil? Do you guys think I should top up or just wait until the obc shows me I need to top up with 1L?

Anyone know how much oil the engine holds?

Maybe I have the wrong number, but it seems as if no one is at Zeemax today

Been dialing the number from the website 021 510 4475 with no answer :dunno:

I never wait for it to reach the 1liter mark. when it needs 750ml i top up. I've done my last oil change over a month ago and the oil consumption has definitely improved.

What happened to the good old days where you had a dipstick :)

Call different dealers for the oil their prices vary, the cheapest is R68 per liter from BMW William Nicol in Josie

Whether my approach helps or not I don't know but here's what I'd have done based on my own experience.

With regards to the oil, when you run the oil check with the OBC, it usually tells you how much it needs below the little bar, or if the oil is still sufficient it will say "OK".

The service light indicator can be checked - when car is turned on standing idle browse throuch the BC menu's till you get to service, go into that menu, and it tells you how many km's remain before certain generalised items need a service.

Also check when last your vehicle was serviced for various items in your service booklet.

When we bought our 320i it had still a while to go before a service was due but the light came on not long after we took delivery, and all it needed was a routine vehicle check, which was R560 at JSN Motors in Bryanston, Jhb.

Be sure to update us on what was done in the end, and what it cost :)

Thanx Dude..

So far - I've topped up the oil with 500ml Castrol Edge 5W40. I just couldn't bring myself to continue driving when the oil level showed low even with the obc showing "OK".

With regard to the service - it is the general vehicle check that is due and it's R510.00 incl VAT at SMG CPT. So gonna be making the booking for that soon.

Rear brakes are also now due. Hoping to have this done on Friday.

Next oil service is now due in 7000km... so will drive another 4 or so months then do an oil service.
