1yr since I bought my 320D M-pack and my journeys

Hi everyone at BMWfanatics, this site really helped me a lot and driving my 1st BMW as a M-pack hooked me that I am sticking with BMW from now on. In 1 year I have driven 31300km with this car and what a pleasure is it to drive it. I drove from Cape Town to Kimberley twice and also to Mahikeng in last year as well as several trips to Malmesbury, Langebaanweg and Ceres just to visit friends or just drive to open up turbo. Even though I use the car to travel to work daily, I simply love the torque.

Now in December I will go on an adventure that I am damn scared of and it will only be myself and 'My White Lady - M3' :rollsmile:

I will be starting my journey to the Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe on 30 November from Cape Town to Windhoek via Springbok, stay there for a few days then travel to Maun in Botswana before going to the Victoria Waterfalls through Zambia where I will cross the water with a ferry before entering Zimbabwe and then stay there for a few days before returning to South Africa via Gaborone in Botswana and going to visit my nephew in Mahikeng.

Seeing that you guys helped me so much, I would like to know if you guys have any advise on my 5900km journey for me and my 320D on the long road. I will try not to push her to 180km/h again but putting her in cruise control at that speed is simply amazing. Is there anything I should think of to put on the car or maybe check as I am thinking of doing another Comprehensive check at SMG BMW for R1400 as well as an oil service to make sure all is fine but would like a 2nd opinion.

After your service like you said you will there is nothing to worry about. :rollsmile:

One thing I mite reccomend is that you take a extra diesel filter. As I do not know how clean the diesel is in that countries. Not to worried about namibia. But the rest.

What an epic trip raise:
I would take a wheel repair kit and Diesel in a jerrycan just to be safe :thumbs:
or just fill up at every service station you find, i have heard that not all of the garages up country have stock of fuel :thumbs:

Good advice from Dippies re the extra filter... Have heard that you can get pretty dodgy diesel up those parts so I'd keep a bit with you in a Jerry can as well

Thanks Dippies, I never thought about an extra diesel filter but I don't know how to replace a diesel filter, too scared I will do something wrong and the diesel filter was replaced on the last service at SMG BMW about 9000km ago and it was a major service costing R5900. I also don't want anyone over there to touch my engine. What about maybe taking 2 bottles of Diesel injector cleaner with me and just putting it in after every 2000km's because I heard they only sell 500ppm and I'm use to 50ppm.

Damn I never thought of that. I got Runflats so I'm not sure if you can repair it with a wheel repair kit but I know I can get a repair kit in ChinaTown, behind Century City. You got me really thinking now if I didn't maybe miss something else.

Also there are service stations every 500-600 km between Namibia and Zambia, crossing Botswana so there should be enough diesel on the way but I will find out where I can borrow a jerrycan. I hope I can take diesel over the borders in anycase :flyfun:

This is a Google printout of the trip I want to take in December 2013 with my Beemer. I'm going to get a Wheel repair kit and Diesel injector cleaner for the trip as suggested by the guys on my thread. If you guys can think of anything else, please let me know as I don't want to be caught out on the trip.

Below are all the stuff I got down that I will need on the trip but not sure if it will be all:
1. R15000 (R5000 in a new credit card and R10000 cash for the fillups and accommodations)
2. Travel snacks (R350 est)
3. Passport already done.
4. International drivers license already done.
5. GPS to buy with Southern African maps. Still looking.
6. MP3 player to play from the aux - 8gigs of songs for the road.
7. Malaria and Yellow Fever shots at the chemist.
8. Oil service and BMW comprehensive check (about R2000)
9. Police clearance and Medical clearance still to do.
10. International cellphone roaming done.
11. Booking deposit for accommodation in Windhoek, Maun, Livingstone, Victoria Falls, Gaborone to be done still.
12. Medical aid, Car cover and Life cover certificate already received.

I do agree with dippies, an extra diesel filter is definately a must, just for incase.

thanks man I will. I'm going to edit my mileage and trip with some economy pics of the BMW. I was thinking of cruising 160-180km/h again as I did on my trips to Kimberley form Cape Town but I'm going to cruise at a max of 140km/h to see my economy. I hope the torque don't bite me again to push more power on the long road. :rollsmile:
