This is what I use for my MINI. Its the same as the BMW oil, just in Castrol packaging and about R50 cheaper per liter. It should be the same oil used in the n54/n55 motors.

From what I have understood about the oil is that it actually breaks up very easily and burns away due to the fact that its as thin as water...

That's the same oil BMW uses in the N54, yes.

EDIT: TWS has been rebranded as Castrol Magnatec Professional.

i changed my oils from 5w30 to 0w40 , and it made the worlds of difference.

cooler oil temps, less oil in in catch can, more consistant performance.

downfall, car takes longer to warm up, but its worth it.

I purchased the oil from Motortechnik. MOBILE 1

I think that changing the thermostat in the oil circulation system, to a cooler one like Riaan335i did, will also make a huge difference. :dunno:

A dipstick would be better then a sensor.

Would installing an oil catch can void MP?

I believe it would. :dunno:
But it shouldn't be necessary to do this if the car was designed properly. Serves me right for buying a Frankenstein car. :fencelook:

250ml/1000km is really not excessive for a high revving and FI motor.

The only thing that concerns me is that the sensor did not pick up on it progressively. One moment all fine, the next 1L gone. There is something wrong with that sensor

Chris, 7000 rpm is not high revving in my honest opinion. I don't want to know what the new M3 (F82) will be like when it comes to oil consumption. Because this will be a high revving engine with the "S" designation. :dunno:

The X35 engines use a poop load of oil. My dads F01 750I use to chow just as much oil and that car was not driven hard at all. Really not something to stress about. Just buy a litre of oil and keep it in your garage/car. No real need to take it in for a top up. The cars do give false readings if they are parked at a slant for a while.

My 1M did the same after a breakfast run, I parked the car, checked the oil and it was fine. When I started the car after breakfast it was red so I stayed at the wimpy, waited another hour and a half then topped it up. It is a bit stressful but the car only did it once. After that it did show the oil lowering at a progressive rate(over 5000km) High revving or not 7k is the red line so the car is under full load.

The trim on the other hand is quite weird. My car is just ticking over a year old with 9000km on the clock and the interior is as good as new.

5W-30 is the correct oil and as stated above it is a thin oil and will burn quicker than say the 10w-60 that is used in the E9X M3's.

I have another question. How long does it take to measure the oil level on your cars? On my 1M it takes almost 20 mins. :dunno:

Takes quite a while to measure the oil level :flyfun:
My E46 320i never used oil despite being hammered on a daily basis.
My E90 330i uses about 500ml per 5k

Oil consumption on high performance engines is par for the course.

You may well find that your engine will regularly consume oil for the first 5-10K untill the rings have bedded in. You will equally find that engine performance increases as the rings bed in.

Once rings bed in the consumption tappers off but will not be entirely gone.

The inacuracy of the OLS is somewhat more of a concern than the oil consumption.

Thanks, that is my concern as well. My gripe, is that the dealer does not really care. I still think the OLS is on the brink. I have found several Technical Service notes on the net referring to faulty OLS. I have attached one of them to this post.
