1M oil consumption and general quality

Where do I start? I've had the 1M since new for 10 months now and I have a bit of an issue. The car doesn't have a bloody dip stick! :argh: It only has the electronic oil level sensor. I check the oil level via the iDrive every time I use the car and it always used to show full. But Sunday on my way back from the charity event, I get a warning on the instrument cluster and on the iDrive display that the the oil needs topping up in yellow. I thought, that's strange as last time I checked, which was 2 weeks ago, it was full. And I did not use the car for 2 weeks. Stop at home and the warning is now red and it (iDrive display) reckons I need to add 1 Liter of oil. I immediately thought it had sprung a leak, but there's no evidence of a leak. I make a booking at the dealership I bought the car from, after some convincing. They reckon just top up the oil, and I wanted to know where a liter of oil has gone in 3800km. So this morning I dropped it off at the dealership, after almost being t-boned by some lady that reckons she does not have to stop at a red traffic light. So I get the call from the dealer, topped up oil and all is good. Checked oil level sensor, and it seems to be fine. Very skeptical, because I found a service note from 2008 stating that these oil level sensors are prone to failing in the N54 and various other engines. So I ask to speak to the Workshop Manager. He phones and explains to me that these engines use lots of oil until the oil rings decide to seat properly. Now, I don't know how true that is... Anybody else here experience high or abnormal oil consumption like this? My 1M has around 5500km on the dial. It had the first oil change done at 1800km.

The next issue is that the trim on the passenger door has started peeling. They cannot replace it, until a rep from BMW SA has inspected the car. :wtf: I now have to take the car back on Wednesday the 3rd of July for the rep to inspect the door trim. And this rep only visits them once a month from 09:00 - 12:00 in the morning. :argh:

Please share your experiences.

Boss, I'm not sure on the 1M but what I can tell you is that the high performance Mercs like the C55 and C63 are like alcoholics when it comes to drinking oil:thumbdo:

Iron Horse with a drinking problem....

errm... just double check on the dipstick... similarly the CSL has the oil level meter and a short dipstick hiding under the Intake box...

Nothing to worry about, I've topped up 2 litres in 9000km

But 1 liter in 3800km. :nono:

My 325i almost has 209k km on the clock and uses no oil even though I drive it relatively hard.

Turbocharged petrol engines irrespective of type in the BMW range consume oil more rapidly than naturally aspirated engines and at more frequent intervals.

The X1 engine 2.0 liter naturally aspirated s-drive engine requires a top up at it's first 7 odd thousand k's.

Cooper S also consumes like an alcoholic (hence being turbocharged).

It's normal IMO that it needed to be topped up.

The n43 (na) engines 1600cc-1998cc needed topping up at about 8000 k's

The oil is going into your intake, check your charge pipe for evidnace.

Get a good quality oil catch can.

You can't judge rowens millage with your, the harder you drive the more oil it drinks. Nothing to stress about. You just driving her hard.

For longivity of your engine get a high quality OCC.

Even my dad's E240 is an oil alcoholic, a liter/liter and a half in 4000km

I don't know if I should be worried or happy.
My N54 has over 126 000km on, mostly hard driving, and I've never had to top it up.
But now I'm concerned about oil level sensor. Maybe it's faulty???
Think I'm gonna get a quote for a new sensor.....

get a catch can and see how much oil is going into the intake... least if you have to empty it often you know where the oil is going...
