1992 E34 M5 Restoration Project

Hey Gents, happy new year to all of you.

Brief update: the M5 is doing well a year on from buying it. Plenty of progress has been made.

1)Turns out the resonator flap was not working (even though we thought it worked we never checked to make sure, lessoned learned), we pulled off the plenum to find the incorrect diameter vacuum lines and the one-way valve was installed... the wrong way. Rectifying these things fixed that issue.

2) ABS light came on. Cleaned all the sensors and also found one of the wires from the rear right sensor had been broken (the one near the battery) fixed that and light went out.

3) Sent warning computer box away to be refurbished. False warning codes gone.

Now, onto the next thing + my question. To preserve this wonderful engine I aim to adjust the valve clearances as I feel this needs to be done. I'm aware that one needs some tools like the special bucket depressing tool, valve cover gasket, and obviously new shims. I was wondering if anybody knows where I could order s38b36 shims in SA, as well as the special tool to depress the bucket to remove the old shims? Any info on this would be appreciated.

Cheers
I had my shims done at a BMW Mech here in JHB. Reason was, shims take about 2 weeks to arrive from Germany. So you need to measure all your clearances, work out what shims you need, order them, wait, install and remeasure, praying that you measured correctly the first time...I took it to someone who had shims in his workshop, so it was a quick job

This is helpful. Thanks. Which Bmw mech in JHB was it if I may ask? I would pm you, but not sure how to do it in this forum.

Having said all that, the E34 M5 is not that fast, especially at altitude :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO: A Golf GTi will drive away from you, but you'll have a bigger smile on your face
Buy it and put the motor in a 3 series box 😁

Remove the plenum so that you may get to the idle control valve and at the same time to the smaller vacuum hoses which need to be checked for cracks and perished ends.
When an engine is steady whilst cold and starts hunting when hot more often than not it is sucking un metered air which will show up as erratic idle when hot.
Clean the ICV with petrol by dipping it or carb cleaner,
Make sure the throttles are all at the same gap when closed or open.
Change spark plugs air filter fuel filter
Set valve clearances
Also do a fuel pressure test.
Remove fuel injectors and clean them in thinners by soaking them for a few hours whilst changing the thinners regularly.

That specific engine is low on torque in the mid range (relatively speaking) so do not expect any great performance.

This is helpful. Thanks. Which Bmw mech in JHB was it if I may ask? I would pm you, but not sure how to do it in this forum.
The mechanic in question. Most of the troubleshooting tips he gave in this post were problems you found while fixing the car.

Hey guys, its me again. It looks like the water pump on the s38 (different water pump to the m30) is in its death throws and BMW don't stock them anymore. They seem to be difficult to come by. It seems we may have to rebuild the original which I know is obviously not ideal but there seems to no alternative. Does anyone recommend a guru in SA that is capable of rebuilding such a water pump?

Unlucky...I have exactly the same situation with mine...someone used locktite to keep the viscous fan on the pump - so the water pump got damaged while trying to remove it 🤬

Unfortunately, none of the OE suppliers seem to be stocking this anymore either, seems even the cheapie $30 dollar pumps are NLA. I have heard of guys transplanting the internals of a M30 pump into the M5 housing, you need a bench press and be very careful indeed... would also assume that the brand/manufacturer of the 2 pumps would need to be the same.

Surely someone needs to make another batch of pumps at some point...please keep us posted

Alright guys, some developments with the old beast:
1.) Managed to refresh the entire rear sls suspension with new accumulators and had the shocks themselves re-conditioned with new seals. Previously the ride was very harsh and uncomfortable, now it rides really nicely. So far I'm glad we stuck to the oem standards and keeping the suspension as original as possible.

2.) After some major anxiety we were able to find and order a new water pump for the car as the old one was in terrible shape (so much vibration that the fan fouled with the shroud and broke) So, new pump, new fan and new shroud. We're sending the old pump to be re-conditioned, hopefully it's not too far gone.

3.) I'm quite keen on doing the valve clearances on the s38 but you need a fancy tool to depress the buckets to extract and replace the shims. This tool you can no longer get from BMW themselves. Luckily, there are aftermarket companies that manufacture the tool, so we managed to order one from Schmiedmann in Denmark. So valve clearances are next on the to-do list along with changing out one of the rear speakers and a good detail. "Nearly there!" I say cautiously but optimistically. Enjoy the weekend.

Hz it.. I would say, clean your injectors. I fitted the 260cc injectors on my 535 and what a transformation, but the consumption and black unburnt fuel wen cold was a issue..
