I purchased new and owned a 2013 135is (N55) for two years and ~14k mi. Great car. Zero problems during my time with it.

I just bought a 128i convertible, because I missed having a 1-series. It's very tame compared to the 135, but a nice car. Handles well on the highway at cruising speeds.

As everyone has mentioned n54 is not the cheapest car to own long term, trust me, has huge potential if modified though.

I would suggest a n55, far less maintenance and similar performance stock for stock.

:coolShake: dude I thinks its a great car - if you dont mod it. I know some guys who have had many happy kms without problems. Find a clean one look after it and you will be happy.

But Fuel :YesNo::YesNo::YesNo:

I'm the guy with the Z4 35i as mentioned above.

I bought the car and have had to spend big money on it so far, So if you do get an N54 make sure you do your homework, I thought I did but I got taken by surprise with regards to a thing called waste gate rattle. That little rattle has turned my life upside down is all I can say. Mostly due to my mechanic that instead of fixing the bush that was worn like I asked had instead sent it to get done where they decided to strip my turbos and tell me that they were stuffed, This put me in a corner because we all know how these places to prove a point and make you spend more money if you tell them to put the turbo back together and return the car, your sure to get a car back with a newly ruined turbo that was fine before hand.

So I have had to buy 2x new turbos, plus labour etc has set me back close to 30k already, this did include tappet cover gasket and sump gasket and a service. I have also had to spend money on other bits and bobs here and there, all in all its cost me a hell of allot of money that i did not expect at all.

The after market warranty is useless they told me they wont replace the turbos or contribute towards them unless it breaks in two pieces. So don't rely on that.

Then there are the gasket problems on these cars, they are a common problem and will leak eventually.

If your injectors haven't been replaced they will need to be at some point and that's allot, the last price I heard was 27k incl labor and vat.

Then the High pressure fuel pump, not sure on the price of this but its allot.

The water pump, last price I got was R7.5k excluding labor to fit.

Then there is the carbon build up problem, need to find a trust worthy place to carbon clean your engine, this is SA so make sure you know where its going and find out if other people have had good experiences with them first.

Boost pipes cracking problem

Sump gasket leak problem

Oil housing gasket leak problem

I am not sure how accurate this is but as far as I know the earlier versions of these N54 motors 2006 - 2008 had a head gasket problem. I know my Dads 2008 E92 335i msport that had 68k on the clock had to have the head gasket replaced and that car was bone stock and my dad looks after his things like no bodies business. That was a 15k situation right there, he got the agents to do the job. Good idea that, I should have taken my car to the agents for the turbo replacement. Although in my defense I thought I was getting a waste gate bush replaced, no idea these clowns were going to strip my turbos down and tell me they worn. :smashScreen:

hmmm can't think of anything else right now but those are the major problems that can and will go wrong, so if you do get one have a look at the mplan history and make sure injectors, water pump and high pressure fuel pump have been replaced else make sure you got some bucks lying around.

Other than that, what an epic car to drive with some serious power and fun factor, well the Z4 35i is anyways, I have never driven a 135i before, I was told a long time ago that the suspension in them wasn't too great and they felt spongy around corners. This was by a guy with a 1M though so who knows how true that is as I'm sure the 1M is going to have far superior suspension and can't really be compared to the 135i.

Hi peeps

Looking at getting a daily I really love the 135i. But it would have to be out of motorplan.

Everywhere I have been reading its been doom and gloom with stuff breaking.

Whats your guys opinion on getting a 135i 2008-11

Thanks

There are a known list of things that need doing on a 135 N54 - water pump, injectors, oil filter housing gasket. It's a good idea to replace the plastic boost pipe with an aluminium one. I wouldn't buy a DCT as if anything goes wrong it's big bucks but a manual is good. Again you need to look at it the right way. As I see it - if I have to choose between spending R30k on a repair to my N54 or buying a new say 235i and dropping R250k in depreciation in a single year for a car with similar performance then it's a no brainer.

I have an N54 that I have spent a bit of money on and I'm still going to do Koni's and coilovers, tempted to put in all the M3 suspension bits and a limited slip diff - then that car will handle like a 1M - at a fraction of the cost.

If you don't set aside enough cash to be able to maintain the car properly then don't buy it.

This is my concern I understand the odd thing or 2 that needs to be replaced but from what I have read here I don't really want it being in the workshop because I bought a lemon. And I don't think the wife will be too happy with me spending so much on it lol

Paul Kane is exactly right. When buying a performance vehicle like this, factor in a budget for things that are likely to fail or known issues that might need attention. You're not buying a new car after all. If, after this, you cannot afford it, then buy something else.

It's like guys buying M cars that they can just afford, but cry when known issues crop up which they cannot afford to fix. As I said before, these are performance cars. They get the crap driven out of them. Be aware of this and plan accordingly, and you will be rewarded with Sheer Driving Pleasure.

My experience with a 2011 N55 135i DCT... The good, the bad, the ugly...

Immediately after buying the car I was disappointed by the DCT gearbox, it shifted well but was completely confused at low speeds 0-20km/h and especially inclines at that speed. Fortunately a 2014 software update fixed that problem and the gearbox was sweet thereafter. The amount of frustration to get BMW to update the software was incredible!!!! Despite all the reports on this problem BMW SA said they had no knowledge of the problem, eventually they relented and approved the upgrade by the dealer.

My car is a May 2011 build so I thought that it wasn't affected by the VANOS recall but after BMW completed 2010 models, they recalled 2011 as well. Much to my horror, my car went in and there was a head of one of the bolts sitting in the sump.... So BEWARE 2011 is also affected despite many reports to the contrary.

At 58000km the water pump failed, I was told this is quite common and it was replaced under warranty ONLY JUST! (I was 2 months from motorplan expiry at the time)

I always had an issue with the engine idle, it would do a "rev bump" when coming to a stop and despite complaining to the dealer and requesting they check for a fuel pump issue - each time they just reset adaptions and gave the car back. Each time the problem returned. I thought I would have to live with the issue because after much searching on the forums some people said it was normal and others had never experienced it. After the motorplan expired I started to do some mods, one of which was to flash the PPK software. I was very impressed with the outcome, not only was my idle issue sorted but the car felt more eager and makes lots more exhaust noises.

In summary for N55 - make sure the VANOS recall has been done, budget for a water pump and then ensure software is updated. As for consumption, its thirsty around town (11-13l/100km) but highway is quite good (7-8l/100km)
If something breaks on any BMW its going to cost, if you want a car with cheap maintenance don't buy a BMW.

It's an awesome car and love mine a lot. From a practicality point it's almost useless. I'm 1.88m tall and no one can sit behind me so max ppl in my car is 3. Do I care, not really.

Bought a vacuum cleaner other day, damn thing did not fit through the boot opening. Boots not that small, but you can have lots of small stuff in it and zero big things. Do I care, not really.
Fuel consumption is crap. Do I care, a bit tbh, can't be helped tho.
Only car I have so by necessity it's my daily.

Best engine the world has ever seen!

Just compensate for turbo rebuild (wastewater rattle) and water pump replacement. These are inevitable.

And carbon clean is a must for that brand new engine feel and sound.

1st rule about 135i - do not talk about fuel consumption. Otherwise it's amazing

Ive got a 2012 135i - n55 dct, love the car. Fun to drive and lots of low down power.
I extended the MP for a additional year.

Problem i have - because its the 2012 model it has a version of ECU(MEVD1726) that cannot easily be flashed with tools like MHD, COBB etc

LOL so basically put 50k away for just those two problems :roflol: Never mind the HPFP and the Injectors that are also inevitable. :roflol:

Yes you can get it cheaper from this place or that place etc but not really, if you want a proper warranty on the parts you need to goto the agents to be honest and then you gonna pay some serious cash for these items. So I reckon a good 100k lying around for a rainy day would be good.

You could be lucky though and never have a days shit with the car....I mean my dad did his head gasket and water pump and then drove the car another 2 years or 3 years and never had so much as an oil leak But a head gasket change on a car with less than 70k on the clock :screwy:.
He did have the odd engine light come on from time to time but each time he took it to BMW they said the car was fine so who knows.

Thing is he sold the car recently because it made him paranoid, he hated the fact that he had to worry about driving the car somewhere far where the fuel pump could pack up or the injectors could fail or the turbos might go. The HPFP has been a big cause of people being stranded on a long trip with these cars which is why BMW did a recall as it was considered dangerous to have people left stranded. Well this is what I read in an article regarding this issue.

I had my 135 for five years, car had on 59k when I sold it, the HPFP was changed under the agents campaign, the car never gave me a days trouble, but the next guy who bought it had the water pump fail, which is a wear item, but had error codes often, somehow I think it had something to do with the mods , I kept the car stock and really enjoyed it..

Recently purchased a 2009 135i from my sister with 100k on the clock. Fuel is bad but the feeling and the sound of the car makes it worth every cent. I did my 100k service and carbon clean myself and kept costs low.
