Hey guys...

How often does your car need an oil top up?

About a month and a half ago I had to book my car in for a topup. If I'm not mistaken it was topped up with 4 litres. Then, today as I get into work my oil light comes on saying that I require 1 litre. Is this normal?

Mileage is low still. Under 40 000kms. 2011 model (n55)

I see there are tuners selling oil separator kits for this problem. It also explains why carbon cleaning of the intake is a something that most N54 and 55 owners end up having to do.

Thats does not sound normal.

What was the time period from the time the oil light came on till you took it to the dealership.4L of oil is alot of oil to top up.

The oil light will only come on when it requires 1L of oil. So it would be a couple of months before you took it in?

The last time a topped up oil was in August when i drove to Durban.

The last time I put oil in was a while ago (couple of months).. other than that just an oil change for service purposes.

how many km did you do in that month?
if you do a lot of spirited driving than the consumption of 1l is normal

1 liter every 3000km is apparently normal.

The common leaks are at the oil filter housing gasket and the oil filter housing heat exchange. Have a look to see if you can spot any oil.

Also check that the oil sensor isn't faulty (apparently pretty common)...happened to me once, one day oil is fine then next day oil low warning is on. Went away the next day though...

Ok so booked car in this morning. Service advisor reckons that car could use up to 700ml oil for every 1000kms. Seems very excessive to me. Waiting on further news...

I had to add about 2L the other day, glad my car isn't the only one using oil

Update...apparently it was the oil sensor that was incorrectly calibrated
