discussion Looking for a Clean 320d - Budget R350k

Even though the title says 320d LCI, I'm gonna rock the boat a bit and play devil's advocate for R350k or less:

EDIT: Since he's only 19, a 320d would be a lot more safer to buy. Being young age and having a fast car, we tend to land ourselves in trouble (I know from experience).
I actually found a super clean 330d with 140k for 330k but my pops says it's too fast

He doesn't know that the lytie is gonna do software on the 20d the first opportunity he gets 😂

For his age, I would try to convince him to go for a 120d (either the coupe or the hatch). A saloon seems a bit too much for a 19 year old.

Autotrader has a few of these (from “reputable dealers” and there is some change to be had for R350k. Enough change for some decent exterior mods.
He's been driving a 1.6 corolla sedan which is probably the same size or slightly bigger and we're looking long term (atleast the next 5 years)

I completely missed out the fact that this is a 19 year old kid when I posted the 335i ad.

There definitely are a lot of F30 320d LCIs for sale within this price range.

I myself was also looking at a 320d as a daily, but considering that 320i prices are a bit less, I decided to opt for the B48. The 320d's I was looking at were extremely high mileage and had a lack of options, compared to my 2018 320i I currently daily drive, yet it was a lot less than the D.

Of course the 320d is definitely the more reliable car and more fuel efficient, but the B48 has proven to be a fairly good engine with decent fuel consumption over time. Its a massive improvement over any past 320i that's for sure. I did a trip to the south coast and I averaged around 5-6 to and back which is impressive for a petrol. As much as I had to replace certain parts, like my waterpump and oil filterhousing, these things are bound to happen on any aging car, and it also comes down to how well the previous owner maintained it as well. Ever since, my car has been extremely solid.

I'm sure @Sabretooth tiger can also add some insight about B48 ownership as he's owned both.

Can't go wrong with either.
320i is also a solid contender but I think he's set on the Diesel.

I told him to just have patience and the right 1 will pop up. That's generally been my experience when looking.

19 year old?

Plus an advanced drivers course can be had for less than R10k.

Bad joke? Ok, I'll stick to my day job.

On a serious note - this is what I would go for - https://www.webuycars.co.za/buy-a-car/BMW/3 Series/819900096
Super low mileage, and being B48, it should be safe for the next 5/6 years. Just remove the stickers
This 320i is quite nicely spec'd out as well. Pro Nav and those dials weren't standard. Wish mine had these 2, but I'm happy I have HK

19 Year olds dont want to drive a car that dads drive. FACT.
They want the flash, the Brrap Brrap and lights underneath, lights inside, blow your gfs bra off sound system, stripes, M badges and scraping the floor for "Stens" - or in english Stance.

All of this is wonderful for a 19 yr old, provided "pops" is paying for the maintenance, bad choices and stupidity.
If "Pops" isnt ponying up and mr 19yr old is going to open his own wallet then follow the advice of others on here, myself included and get the car a reliable Japanese car (KIA, Hyundai with all the flash) and he can live his life without fear, while tearing it at every traffic light.

Litey isnt going to pull chicks if the car goes into limp mode when hes doing rolling starts on the streets, light to light.
But then again, maybe Pops is waxed and so is 19yr old, in which case buy the guy what he wants, let him make friends with an Indy mechanic and off you all go.

Wonderful advice, I sent it on the family group

Thanks

I would rather have my son or daughter in a 3 series rather than anything that's Chinese and especially small.
He can act irresponsible in any car, so rather in a safer, bigger and better built car.

As for the model - cant go wrong with a 320D , plus will be way more efficient than a 320i, especially of driven more spiritedly.

Irresponsible in a car that maxes at 150 vs irresponsible in a car that maxes at 250 are two different worlds.
I wouldn't give a 19yr old something this fast, there are cheaper town cars that should fit the bill, even if you had the dosh.

He's 19, if he wants a beemer get him a beemer.

The only thing we can do for the youth these days is try and guide the poor arrogant bastards as best we can. They are corrupted by social media and "friends" daily so no matter how well he smiles and says yes dad, I won't speed dad, you know he's gonna do it when you're not around.

No car brand is safer than the other too, look at those 4 kids who died in a beemer here in Brackenfell last month, was a 325, driver clearly showing off and speeding but would it had mattered if it was a 318 or an M3? You could argue in saying the M3 might have handled the speed better but nothing is gonna change what happened.

The question here should not be what car we think is best but how disciplined the kid is and even that WILL change when he switches from a Corolla to a BMW, that's fact.

Do I think a 320d is fine for a 19 year old? Yes
Would I give my son a R350k car when he has wheels? No, that R350k would go way better towards a townhouse or something for the little shit.
