Hi all,

Here's a little (not little) intro for my new car,
I wouldn't necessarily call it the "replacement" for the E39 540i/6, the reason for that is because the replacement was acquired for very different reasons, and in many ways, to "save" the 540i.
Why I say that, is because there are many cool, fun, engaging, thrilling and exciting cars from BMW, but some in my personal opinion, are just special. For me, and with my current 540i being the second one I've owned, they fit the bill of very special, at least in my eyes.
Their rarity locally, the E39 being one of my favourite BMW platforms ever, the timelessness of the design, the way the 540i does things that other models just can't or things that have elements they lack, the package as a whole is just very uncompromising and complete.
This is where one of the issues comes in for me, as an OEM or OEM+ product, the 540i is perfect for me, but I want to fiddle, I want to modify, I want to customise, I want to have fun, that's just where I am at this point in time, and it's one of the things I love about cars.

That's where selling the 540i comes into play.
If I could store the 540i away somewhere, for once I am ready to drive a car as was intended by the manufacturer, or even I guess you could say mature enough to do so, whichever you want to cut it, I would keep the car for a long time, maybe forever!
However, the fact is, I already have too many cars and projects to do that, and I don't have the space or resources.
My daily is basically a highly modified, off-road oriented 4x4: https://www.youtube.com/@symmetry4wd/featured
Which I really don't mind driving everyday, but it's not "fun" so to speak on the road, nor suited to it.
So the daily and fun road car duties were meant to fall to the 540i.
But with my need to fiddle and fettle I would likely ruin one of the best cars I've ever owned, the 540i.

So it's a tough pill to swallow, but I think it would be better letting go of the car to an owner who would enjoy the car for what it is, and become a better custodian to the 540i than I would have, in nutshell.

Those are my thoughts, my confession and sharing moment.

Moving on,
I've always had an E46, E36, E39 or E34, but it's time for something a bit different, variety is the spice of life, or so they say!
I have always wanted one in this specific spec, and fits the bill for what I need rather well, as a tuneable yet usable and practical platform.

*165 000 KMS

The car has an almost complete service record/history.
I have already had the follow done:

Oil and oil Filter
Air Filter
Differential Oil
New Battery
Crank Pulley/Damper inspected

The things I wanted in an E90 330D were:

LCI
Manual
M Sport
Manual
Black Leather
Manual
Interesting Exterior Colour (not Black, White or Silver)
Manual
IDrive

This one ticked all the boxes, and it's been years that I've been eyeing them out when they come up for sale, and had to pull the trigger sometime.

I collected the car yesterday, I have been enjoying it since.
It's not the most perfect example I've ever seen or driven, but it's great in all the areas that matter to me, and overall a clean car.
I've driven them in auto form, and while the box pairs really well with the engine's characteristics and feel, it was manual or nothing for me, and I am not disappointed.

The only "issue" and red flag with the car is:
When I got a vin check done on the car, in 2018 on the NATIS system, the car was recorded at change of ownership with 199800KMS.
Thought if you noticed the * above regarding mileage, the car's odometer shows 165000kms, right now, in 2024...

This obviously raises some questions, as to mileage tampering or rollback etc

The problem is:
I see no tamper dot, but this can easily be removed anyway.
The 199800km reading is from the previous owner/dealership, not the owner I bought from at 165000km.
BMW can't run a full diagnostics on the car, to see that the mileage recorded on the key, cluster and DME all line up and match. (according to them, there diagnostics machine and software is new and updated, which messes with older models it is used on, and in the E90's case, can fry the FRM module, which is a R10000 part)
The car doesn't have it's original service book, so I have the service records from BMW while the car was under plan (up to 88000kms), then once when it visited BMW in 2015 (at 131000kms), then the book since the last owner has had it and was serviced at HD Auto from like 138000kms - now.

Any advice on this, or ideas on how I could verify the actual mileage?!

All things considered,
I bought the car based on the way it drove and its condition, not what the mileage is or was. These cars and engines are tough, so am I 😅 so I took the plunge regardless.
But I would still like to get to the bottom of it and figure out what its mileage is!

Anyway,
here are a couple pics from the ad and when I picked it up, and went window shopping for new shoes (it's raining so can't take pics at the moment)451751687_10159865668221436_6832362168547004011_n.jpg451545729_10159865669371436_4344089010262440794_n.jpg451683226_10159865668976436_8740567262193590947_n.jpg451684327_10159865668911436_5468722628335382102_n.jpg451755218_10159865669281436_5748227287650253503_n.jpg451789901_10159865668541436_8739698527129064277_n.jpg451863316_10159865669471436_1980258007258238506_n.jpg451870499_10159865669211436_755871167662915207_n.jpg451749532_10159865683001436_7417066632828316937_n.jpg451677074_10159865669146436_2104048891520511456_n.jpg451999653_10159865668776436_724674882784528773_n.jpg:

Congrats bud. Wish you many happy kms.

How are you finding the 30d paired with a manual?
Thanks,

I am really enjoying the manual, loving it in fact!
I've never driven anything newer than an E90 in manual, to compare against the previous e chassis cars I've driven, it has nice short throws, is quite precise and with the N57, its very easy to use. All that being said, it still does have the typical BMW rubbery feel, not the bolt-action feel like some other good manual cars.
The clutch delay valve does no favours to the experience, I would like to get rid of it I think.

1st and 2nd gear are very short and snappy, when you are giving it some, the N57 gets through the revs rather quickly for a diesel. From third onwards it feels great, and rewarding doing it yourself.
I haven't tried to launch the car, and that's not really my thing anyway, but I can imagine the manual 330D's to be quite difficult to get off the line smoothly and quickly. That's where I think the auto would shine, and the fact you that you can just flat shift.

For normal driving the manual feels great paired with the N57 👌

@maleven-GP Thanks!

Awesome car and nicely specced! Congrats on finding one of these. Weird on the mileage, it almost seems like someone made an error when they recorded that 199k...

I quite like these on the stock 17" M-sport wheels or style 216 18". OEM or bust! :ROFLMAO:

Congrats. She looks stunning. Enjoy

I am also keeping my eye out for a clean E90 LCI 330d MSport. Very hard to come by.

That's awesome bud. My 320d is manual and agree on 1 and 2 being short. A downpipe and remap is a must if it doesn't have this done already!

In terms of wheels, once again most of us are OEM fans.

My personal favourite on an E90 are 19inch style 313M's:

@FILV Thanks, insane torque, loving it! Almost makes me think people are crazy to tune these because they pull like a train stock.

@Gordvisr Thanks, yeah I am really leaning towards those 5 Spoke wheels, you can almost never go wrong on any car with a clean 5 spoke 👌 They also have a very nice satin finish and a good grey colour in person, + they are flow formed and lightweight, by Koya.
Regarding the style 437 wheels, they do look absolutely fantastic aesthetically, but I absolutely do not want to go 19's unfortunately😬 I like the feel, performance and look of a meaty tire, plus the added ride quality and protection it offers, so 19's are out of the question for me, which is extremely sad, because all of the best suited OEM wheels for the E90 are 19's!😢

@Benji Thanks! RE the mileage, yeah, the car is clean, inside and out, leather still good, just wear on the gear knob and steering wheel, condition still good both in appearance and mechanically, so almost seems like a mistake, but who knows?!?! I still want to get to the bottom of it, but either way, like I said, I bought on condition, that's what was important to me, and I'm not sorry I did, because if it was high mileage it has still obviously been looked after!
RE the wheels, I do like the OEM 17's and the way the 335i spec brakes fill them to the brim, but overall they aren't my favourite and tires in the 17s are super limited.
The 216s look fantastic, really cool wheel, and you don't see them that often, but the specs don't allow for a lot of tire really, unless you manage to find a square setup, but then also you would likely need to run spacers to get a good fitment which I would prefer not to do if possible. Very cool though, keep an eye out for me😋

@DRCraig Thanks, yeah, I'm sure when you find the right one you won't be disappointed.

@Demontec Thanks🙏

@modocrat Thanks, I like both the 225's and 193's, but basically it's the same situation as I replied to @Benji
Also, aren't the 225's prone to cracking?

@///M Individual Thanks, A remap, DP, EGR delete etc are on the cars both for reliability/maintenance reasons, and fun. The car is bone stock at the moment.
I also agree, and am a big fan of the OEM wheels in general, both in style, and build/manufacturing quality and strength. BMW also make some of the best looking OEM wheels ever.
All the styles I really like, in the width and offsets I like, for the E90 in particular, are 19's, and like I mentioned, I definitely don't want to go the 19" route, which is unfortunate.
So that goes for the style 313's, which SUCKS! They are my favourite OEM wheel for a non M E90 by far, but are 19"

I could go reps, but I don't like cheap/unknown brand reps, if I have to go reps they need to be from a somewhat known and reputable manufacturer, hence my appeal towards the A-Line branded semi-forged Koya Wheels, or other known brands.
There's a lot of good looking reps out there in the styles I like, but i just don't know how well they are made, and with myself and my family driving in the car, I just don't trust them unfortunately.
I wish there were style 313's in 18"...

@AshG108 definitely.

@///M3FAN Thanks!

@sash Thanks!

Those 5 Spoke A-LineChase/Koya SF15 that I am quite keen on, are an 18x9 +35, which would allow me to run a square 255/35 18 or 245/40 18 setup, or even a 245/40 18 F 265/35 18 rear, which are all nice meaty setups.
And with the torque this car has and wanting to be able to drive it to my limits (much lower than the cars limits, I'm no race driver) I want to have as much rubber as I can squeeze in there.
Those othe A-Line RK GM/Koya SF01 wheels are 18x9 +33, which is also nice, but I prefer the simpler 5 spoke design of the SF15.
I'm still very much debating which direction to go, but I am leaning to something a bit different, which I think those 5 spoke wheels would offer.

I think on every BMW I've owned, each of them only being around a year+- of ownership, I at least tried 2-3 if not more wheel options in the time of ownership, each, so I guess nothing is ever set in stone.
My e34 530i, I must of had 5 different wheels setups within a year, from oem, to BBS, to Racing Dynamic and A-Line etc

This has helped a lot in terms of ideas for tire size and fitment, very useful!

I wish we had more quality aftermarket options, like the Apex wheels in SA...
