New X1 18d (U11) or X3 20d (G01 LCi)

My cousin is looking for some advice between the above two vehicles. He travels around 300kms a day and wants something economical and reliable. Previous vehicle was a Hilux 2.8GD-6 D/cab that cost him around 17k a month in fuel. I have convinced him to try a BMW X diesel which will be lighter and since he no longer has a need for a bakkie/4x4 as well.

He was set on the X3 until he sat in the new X1 and saw the huge difference in the interior being a U series compared to the G series X3.

If the X1 came with the 20d it would be a no brainer but only offered with the 18d in the diesel option at the moment. Not sure how these motors are and if they suffice to carry the weight or feel a bit underpowered? He will test drive one for a few days before making the final call but just checking as some of you may have experience with the 18d even in the previous gen X1 or X3

Around 250k price difference between the two brand new M Sport models with similar specs.

Let me know your thoughts. Is the X3 worth 250k more?

PS. He has also considered fully electric and had the iX3 over the weekend and currently has the iX 40 with him. Was happy with the power and features etc. but electric not for him just yet.

The X1 is a cross over while the X3 is an SUV.
The X1 18d is also front wheel drive, while the X3 20d is AWD while the X3 18d is RWD.

I have not driven an X1 18d.

Ignoring the excellent value of buying a used X3 G01, BMW should have more room for new car discounts on the locally made X3 vs the fully imported X1.

Did some research and also found due to FWD the X1 comes with an Aisin transmission as opposed to the ZF in the X3. I also think SUV will be more suited than a cross over.

I understand the appeal of buying new, but if you can convince him to buy slightly used there are a few X3 30d out there at the same, if not cheaper, price than a new X3 20d.

If he's driving about 300km a day, I'm guessing its long distance driving? The 30d would be much more enjoyable with that extra grunt under his right foot without a huge difference in fuel consumption.

Testing the 2019 20d X4 (similar in size and to X3) and comparing real world fuel test against the 30d X3 G01.

Oddly enough, the 2,0-litre engine proved only marginally more fuel efficient than the X3 30d we tested in the April 2018 issue; that unit returned 7,4 L/100 km on our standardised fuel run, as opposed to the four-cylinder’s 7,0 L/100 km.

I would've expected the above results given the 20d engine has to work harder to shift the weight of the car. Often you have to really go WOT on the 20d to make rapid progress, whereas the 30d would be ahead on POT.

This 2018 320i B48 did 900km on a tank, not bad 60km range left.

Yes we have considered the Corolla Cross Hybrid but it is underpowered after driving one and also the waiting period is around 14 months for the top of the range XR model. Been on the waiting list since last year July and not even an update since.
