Hi,

The new WRX is about to be officially launched in SA in both manual and CVT options. 2.4 flat turbo 4 pushes out 202kw and 350Nm. Pricing is TBC.

Just thinking if there is still a place for the Scooby in today's market place. Back in the 00s, the WRX (granted, the STi version) and Mitsubishi Lancer Evo dominated this segment - turbo 4 cylinder, compact sedan body, AWD.

Nowadays, we have the Audi S3, Merc A35 and BMW M235i that push out more power and have arguably better badges than the humble WRX. The new STi is yet to be confirmed, but it would go up against the RS3, A45S and M240i (okay, not a proper rival but close enough).

What are your thoughts on the new WRX? It does seem have a cross over look about it and seems to have higher ground clearance than its European rivals. Also it has the option of manual box that its rivals don't. But, I can't see many people rushing to get this car.

i think it still has a place.

These rally inspired cars have a different following in SA than the normal run of the mill German hot hatch, Im not sure if you have driven an Sti or not but its a different event.
The feel and noise is worlds apart from the other 4 banger fart machines we see at every robot.

they may not sell in the numbers but they most certainly have a following.

Feels like Scooby aare stuck in the past to some extent. When the old early 2000s STIs came out with near 200kw from a 4cyl motor that was serious power. Nowadays the new A45AMG hs over 300kw in a 4pot from stock, insane power.

Added to that I think the rally driving heritage is less today, back in the day the WRX STI found its way onto raallying, do these still hit the dirt roads? Then there's the interior quality difference etc. etc.

An old bug eye is really special, eagle too, and of course the first gen impreza as well. But since they made it a hatch it's been pretty much nothing special (to me at least).

looks terrible.... But there is still a small click in Boksburg that love Subaru.

Theres no place for CVT tho. Can they stop making that terrible box already.

@Nick the classic scoobs I agree have a place and are legends. The new ones? Totally irrelevant. They aren't even in the same area code as the newer cars from other manufacturers and the STI still has the same motor with exactly the same problems nearly 2 decades later... they keep that motor going because of the 'rally link' apparently despite a 'hot' version of the FA20T motor having so much promise if they bothered to develop it. That is going to be replaced with an electric motor now.

This suffers from the same HORRIBLE approach to styling as the Type R - it is a mish mash of every other design on the market... Old Subarus were 'ugly but lovable' or 'controversially styled'. this is just a dog's breakfast.

I think ugly but lovable is a great way of putting it - the old ones had character, real speed (for the time) and even if the materials weren't great they were well built. I really don't know "who" the target market is for the new ones.

I happen to have detailed one of the legendary status ones this weekend for a mate. Functional, Purposeful and it has aged very well.

I can say that the materials inside are not fancy in terms of design, but BOY are they resilient and they have stood the test of time. Unfortunately most of these have ended up in the hands of those that don't appreciate them for what they are and don't have the funds to keep them going or looking their best

In today's time when they mention 'rain sensing wipers' as a highlight feature on a nearly R900k car, it says a lot in my book and it aint good.
Well there are some cars that don't have that at double that price if I recall correctly when looking at a 2022 base Carrera 🤔 🤣 Then again the Chinese and French will have that on a car a third of the price as this WRX 🤣
