Good evening Fanatics,

I have been probing at this particular notion for a number of years.

I have been looking to get into the seat of a Z4M forever! It’s one of those cars that just grip you never quite get over not having one !

I’ve been looking around for a while and have read many of the reported issues.

My questions are for the experienced S54 and E85/86 knowledgeables are what are the common pitfalls one should look at if I managed to find a 2007/2008 model. I’m sure there are many threads but looking for some current info and figures and data!

Is rodbearing issue still something to be done and if so has anyone had this done recently and expected costs to do it properly.

Also, are there any other things one should do preventatively to ensure no major failures (clutches, etc).

What and how could I determine if a car is a good one or a lemon and what should I check for as a quick reference.

Bit of a novice and need to be informed before pulling the trigger.

I really want to join this “club” and want the thrill of that motor and all its joy.

Help would be much appreciated,
Thanks in advance.
Dan

Dan the costs are roughly as follows
Bearings 23k
Vanos 10k
Mountings 4k
Power steering hose R5k
Plugs air filter cabin filter R3,5k
Obviously parts can be had from Dean at BMW Midrand at a lesser price than normally would be the case.

Once those issues are sorted they are trully epic driver cars.
Good luck with your search

I have owned 2 and have had great fun in them until my physique changed to portly and my belly interfered with the steering wheel.

I bought one of the cars that Peter owned and can attest to his work, they are special cars indeed!

If you still in the doubt, perhaps you could try the following to settle you into comfy seat to make a purchase:

1)Search for other cars of the similar likes, eg e46 M3s and 3.0ltr Z4s, that are for sale and take them for a spin keeping all sense wide open to get a feel for these motors and the Z4s. However thats not what a Z4M is exactly. But you would be able to pick up the sounds and behavour of the S54 engines as well as all the little niggles of the Z4 chassis.
2) Youtube Z4M and S54.
3) Have a Mechanic/Technician with good track record in dealing with these cars.

I was bloody scared last December when I purchased, but I held my enthusiasm as I looked around, especially when I saw my car for the first time. Checked each concerns one at a time, assigned cost to repairs that may be needed to get my projected purchase price, then finally went for a spin. One other thing I insist on is to have the car started from cold in my presence.
